Wow is this a busy week. After the runaway success of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" last week -- and other shoe-in blockbusters in the weeks before it -- it's nice to see a little bit of variety for Friday's releases. "G-Force," with showings in two and three dimensions both, is an easy weekend win for families, provided they're not making a repeat (or first-time) trip to Hogwarts.
The CG animated adventure about a secret agent force of talking guinea pigs is a big-ticket item for a number of reasons. It is Disney's first (non-concert) live-action release shot in Digital 3-D. It is also produced by blockbuster-meister Jerry Bruckheimer in his 3-D debut. Then there's the knockout ensemble cast, which includes Nicolas Cage, Penélope Cruz, Steve Buscemi, Tracy Morgan, Will Arnett, Bill Nighy and Zach Galifianakis. Yeah, wow.
Those looking for more adult fare have two options to consider. First up is the Leonardo DiCaprio-produced "Orphan," starring Peter Sarsgaard, Vera Farmiga and Isabelle Fuhrman. Warner Bros. has been pretty tight-lipped with the details: a couple decides to adopt after the tragic loss of their child, but the new kid has a few dark secrets that she isn't sharing. Call me crazy, but I smell a twist.
For couples who want a less frightening date night movie, there's also certified rom-com "The Ugly Truth." Katherine Heigl plays a TV producer who is (if you can believe it) undateable. She agrees to let her chauvinistic colleague (Gerard Butler) help her out, and... well... I'm sure you can imagine where things go. I'm sure it's a perfectly serviceable rom-com, but I won't lie: those are not my scene.
There are also a trio of Sundance players hitting theaters in limited release this weekend. "Shrink" stars Kevin Spacey as a pot-addled Los Angeles celebrity shrink. "In the Loop" is an ensemble political comedy which pushes the United States and the United Kingdom to the brink of a modern-day war. And finally there's "The Answer Man" (formerly "Arlen Faber"), which stars Jeff Daniels as a celebrity author who would appreciate a bit more peace and quiet in his life.
So there you have it: a kiddie flick, a thriller and a rom-com, flanked by a trio of indie delicacies. Plus, "The Hurt Locker" opens even wider this weekend. With so many movies to choose from, which will you see? Remember, we want to hear what you think! Head over to Your MTV and upload your video reviews. We'll run the best of 'em here on the Movies Blog!
