David FincherThe curious case of David Fincher's directing decisions just got a little bit curiouser. Fincher has already broken ground with gritty thrillers like "Se7en" and "Fight Club," while also proving his weight in epic dramatic fare with "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." Now the filmmaker is going to tackle an all-new arena -- the social networking scene.

According to Variety, Fincher is in advanced talks with Columbia Pictures to direct "The Social Network," an Aaron Sorkin-penned film that focuses on the formation of Facebook. Read More...

Zac EfronFROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: Zac Efron is all grown up, and having quite a year. He’s received good reviews for the upcoming “Me and Orson Welles,” and “17 Again,” and proved to have a lot of staying power at the box office with his starring “17″ turn. (He even managed to hold out against “X-Men Origin: Wolverine,” which is no small feat!)

Efron surprised many when he dropped out of “Footloose”, but he’s eager to take on more mature roles, and making good progress by joining projects such as “The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zac is continuing his movie maturation by landing the lead part in an untitled thriller.

Transformers: Revenge of the FallenSo! Michael Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" swooped into theaters last night. The stats from Fandango tell some pretty crazy stories. For example, the current rate of ticket sales for the movie is averaging out to eight every second. This led to more than 2,000 sold out midnight screenings last night, which means that a staggering 94% of the ticket outlet's sales are for the giant robot blockbuster.

Who cares about numbers though? Wouldn't you rather hear a report straight from the war zone? Sandra Segura, one of our intrepid interns, braved the crowds last night to join in on the "Transformers" party. Check out her thoughts along with some pictures of the crazy after the jump. Read More...

David Yates"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the final entry in superstar novelist J.K. Rowling's magical septology, is a long book. Like, really long. There's a treasure hunt, a road trip, a great big battle... crap happens, the major players deal with it, and then more crap happens. That's about as spoiler-free synopsis as I can offer.

There's a point here: in order to properly adapt the lengthy final volume into a movie, the Potters-that-be (get it?) have decided to split it into two. "Half-Blood Prince" and soon-to-be "Deathly Hallows" director David Yates had a little chat with the Los Angeles Times recently about his plans for splitting up the narrative. If you haven't read the book and want no spoilers, you can stop here knowing the following: the first movie will break at roughly the middle of the book. Read More...

New MoonFROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: Make room on your bookshelves, Twilighters. EW.com just revealed the new movie tie-in book cover for "New Moon" (click here to see the full version in all its Taylor Lautner glory), and it might make you a Team Jacob convert yet (that is, if you're not one already!).

Upon initial inspection the first thing I noticed was Jacob's shorn hair (finally!) and that extra 30 pounds of muscle Taylor packed on to secure the role (thank you, sleeveless tee!). It then took nearly five seconds of frantic searching to locate Edward's (Robert Pattinson) dazzling face staring back at me from inside the moon. Clever, publishers. Clever.

Johnny Depp in Alice in WonderlandYesterday I took you on a tour through Johnny Depp's long and storied film collaborations with director Tim Burton. Why? Because new images from Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" popped up online, including a clear look at Depp in full costume as the Mad Hatter. I didn't sleep last night, thanks to that image.

Now I want to give you something a little bit different. Burton's "Alice" is hardly the first one. There have been no less than 20(!) film adaptations of Lewis Carroll's story, including several foreign versions, an anime reinterpretation and a porno. After the jump I've inserted a bunch of images from "Alice" across the years. Is the porno in there, you ask? You'll have to click to find out (it isn't). Read More...

Ed McMahonThe death of Ed McMahon, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and Perez Hilton's scuffle with Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am dominated Twitter's trending topics today, and the Twitter-Wood feed is on the case. Ashton Kutcher, Jon Favreau and plenty of others tweeted condolences to Johnny Carson's former "Tonight Show" announcer, who died today in Los Angeles.

Tweets on the latter two categories have been significantly more mixed in their sentiments, but "Revenge of the Fallen" star Tyrese Gibson maintained his Twitter vigil that's been documenting his recent film-related travels. Meanwhile, Ice-T chimed in with some public advice to Hilton. You can check out all of those tweets, our second celeb camera phone pic of the Mona Lisa, and much more below in the Twitter-Wood report for June 23, 2009. Read More...

Johnny Depp projects

That image up there is a scan of card that "Public Enemies" star Johnny Depp held in his hands. MTV's Josh Horowitz handed it to him, because the actor has so many projects flying through the rumorwaves that it's hard to keep track.

Depp's big reveals were that he'll be occupied next year with both the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie and the long-talked-about adaptation of the UK vampire TV series "Dark Shadows." That's not all though. Slipped into the seemingly offhand comment is Depp's confirmation that rumored director Tim Burton is indeed involved with the project. Fantastic news. As you saw yesterday, Burton and Depp make magic together. Check out a video of Josh's time with Depp after the jump or head over to MTV.com to see the full interview in MTV Rough Cut: 'Public Enemies'. Read More...

TwilightFROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: If there’s one thing that “Twilight” and “True Blood” fans can both agree upon, it’s that vampires don’t suck — well, they do literally suck, but… ah, you get the point.

No matter which one you’re a fan of, both bloodthirsty franchises have strong support from their viewers. In a lot of cases, those viewers are active in the social media circuits like Twitter and Facebook. And while neither “Twilight” nor “True Blood” tends to edge the other out too badly in terms of online mentions, something very odd occurred to the contrary just last week.

John GrishamNow a decade after John Grisham's novel "The Testament" first landed in bookstores, the bestselling author has decided that it is time for the book to join his other titles like "The Associate," "A Time to Kill," and "The Rainmaker" in Hollywood. The best-selling author, who reportedly held out for creative control over the film, seems to have found a deal he liked enough to option the book to producers Mark Johnson and Hunt Lowry, and 821 Entertainment.

"I've been calling [Grisham and his agent] since I read ["The Testament"] the first time and felt it had the best of the courthouse stuff that John writes so well, plus this exotic adventure in deepest Brazil," Johnson told Variety. Read More...
