OscarsDidja hear?! The Oscars’ Best Picture category is expanding from a svelte, ultra-elite five nominees to a bloated, practically unfussy 10. Paging Mr. Paul Blart…

What else are we to make of this unlikely change. Was the public clamoring for more nominees? Were there really ten films in 2008 that deserved the undeniable cache of a Best Pic nod? I have nothing against expansion—Major League Baseball’s wildcard playoff system was a sublime instance of business needs meeting sports fan demands. But who demanded this? Read More...

Everything sounds better with a French accent. That’s just a fact, and it’s something Movies Editor Josh Horowitz learned anew while chatting with Marion Cotillard about her upcoming Christopher Nolan film, “Inception.”

No matter that the Parisian actress wouldn’t give up the juicy inside facts—partly because she didn’t know, partly because declined to say—about the secretive film that we crave here at MTV News. No matter that all she’d tell us about the plot is that it’s “about the mind.” No matter that she teased Josh at one point, “You so want to have information—I can see you!”

A Christmas Carolby Jett Wells

New York press and movie critics got their first glimpse at an animated Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge in a presentation of 3-D footage from Disney's "A Christmas Carol" at the Regal E-Walk Theatre this week.

Two scenes were shown from the performance capture-driven film, directed by Robert Zemeckis ("Polar Express"), along with a montage of clips and a teaser trailer. Publicists were showing the footage every half hour from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with Christmas cookies and pastries on offer outside the theatre after each showing. Read More...

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallenby Alan Kistler

The Transformers are known for being butt-kicking, gun-wielding giant robots able to disguise themselves as really cool vehicles and robotic animals. Still, some of these "robots in disguise" have not always had the best or most practical disguises. Especially compared to enemies who still have mobility when they turn into cars or planes and such. Seriously... what is a boom box supposed to do against a mac truck?

Michael Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is out today. Finally. So for your amusement, I've prepared a list of classic Transformers who have obviously been short-changed in life. At least Soundwave gets some redemption in the new movie. Confused? Don't worry... you'll see... Read More...

Fraggle RockEditor's note: This is far, far outside of Movies Blog's coverage zone, I know. But "Fraggle Rock" is the greatest and this news is hella cool. So enjoy.

FROM SPLASH PAGE: This week, Archaia Comics and the Jim Henson Company confirmed rumors of a potential partnership between the two creative companies, and offered official word that the pair would be publishing new comic book series and graphic novels based on popular properties like “The Dark Crystal,” “Labyrinth” and “Mirrormask.” And while this news on its own should be enough to excite fans of Henson’s varied and much beloved library, the pair also offered Splash Page readers the exclusive announcement regarding which property will be the first to hit shelves.

“‘Fraggle Rock’ is going to be the first book that we launch,” Archaia’s Director of Development, Stephen Christy, told MTV News. “We’re launching with ‘Fraggle Rock’ and other titles will be forthcoming.”

Christian BaleThough Christian Bale has two huge entries in the summer ’09 movie season—“Terminator Salvation” and next Wednesday’s “Public Enemies”—he hasn’t actually shot a film in a year. But this July he’ll be returning to work and—as MTV’s Josh Horowitz learned during an interview with the actor to promote “Enemies”—kicking some serious ass when he does.

The film, called “The Fighter,” co-stars Mark Wahlberg, and tells the true story of “Irish” Micky Ward (Wahlberg), who goes on a “Rocky”-like journey through the world of light welterweight boxing with the help of his brother Dickie Eklund (Bale), a boxer-turned-jailbird-turned-trainer. Kevin SpaceyYou can expect a lot of things from a versatile actor such as Kevin Spacey. One thing you cannot expect, apparently, is the expected.

Case in point: The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Kevin Spacey's self-produced ensemble comedy "Father of Invention" has enlisted four actors for the film, including Camilla Belle (that's normal), Heather Graham (we're still okay), Craig Robinson (wuh?) and... Johnny Knoxville?! Read More...

Harry Potter letterI've been bad, dear readers. You may have noticed in the comments for yesterday's eBay Prop-Watch that someone took issue with my posting of a potentially fake movie prop from one of the "Harry Potter" movies. I did explicitly state that there was no definitive proof of its authenticity, but I also recognize that there's a serious collector's market out there for this kind of thing.

Just to be clear, eBay Prop-Watch is a fun daily feature which is meant to highlight cool movie-related stuff that pops up on eBay. This is not meant to be taken as any sort of "official" source for prop-finding. Still, I feel I owe you all a proper Potter relic now. Which brings us to today's selection, which does indeed include a certificate of authenticity. Read More...

The Hangoverby Gabriel Lipson

After inflicting a hurricane of damage throughout Las Vegas, "The Hangover"'s inebriated foursome somehow fled the city without any major legal repercussions. Sure they'd owe reparations to Caesar's Palace, but cleverly placed plot devices and bureaucratic loopholes allowed the men to skirt the law.

Imagine now for just a moment that the Nevada legal system worked as it should have. If the law had won, how much would Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) have lost? Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: Both began their careers in the mid-'80s with instant classics ("Empire of the Sun," "A Nightmare on Elm Street"), matured as actors with critically acclaimed roles in the '90s ("Ed Wood," "American Psycho") and broke through with iconic characters in recent years (the "Pirates" and "Batman" films). Both possess the rare quality of making women want them and men want to be like them — and the even rarer skill of being indie-minded actors who lose no credibility when they delve into blockbuster territory.

And on Tuesday evening, the remarkably similar career trajectories of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale converged on a red carpet full of gals, guns and gangsters at the premiere of "Public Enemies."
