Michael Jackson is getting a lot of play on all of MTV's channels today, and with good cause. There are plenty of places you can go to check out the original video for "Thriller" as a result, but I feel that it deserves a special mention here on Movies Blog.

Directed by John Landis and featuring makeup/special effects work from creature creator Rick Baker, "Thriller" is nothing less than a full-blown short film set partially to Jackson's catchy song. It even ran alongside a screening of Disney's "Fantasia" after its 1983 MTV premiere in order to qualify for Oscar contention. The magic speaks for itself. "Thriller" continues to be regarded as the best music video of all time, and yet it is so much more than that. Watch and enjoy.

Michael JacksonThe memorial tweets continued long after I checked the Twitter-Wood feed last night and posted the flurry of reactions to Michael Jackson's death that were showing up. Today, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger offered his condolences and Paris Hilton, in addition to a steady stream of thoughts about the King of Pop's death, posted a recent family photo taken with Jackson.

There will surely be more before today's regular Twitter-Wood update goes up later today, but in the meantime, here are the day's most recent Michael Jackson-related tweets from Jon Favreau, Mariel Hemingway, Michael Ian Black, and others. Read More...

Zack SnyderIt’s the bold news that all of Hollywood is still buzzing about, as well as weighing its implications: 10 movies will be nominated for Best Picture at the next Oscars, double the usual amount. But when I caught up with Zack Snyder this week, he had yet to hear the news.

“10?” marveled the “Watchmen” and “300” director, who had been tied up all day doing interviews for those films’ upcoming Blu-Ray releases. “No way!”

Yes way. And, since we had the unique opportunity to break the news to one of Hollywood’s top filmmakers, we were also able to get his unfiltered thoughts as he processed the Academy’s bold decision – and what it meant for his profession. Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: By a stroke of luck (or, perhaps, fate), MTV was fortunate to launch just before Michael Jackson went supernova.

Back in 1981, he wasn't yet a global brand or a cultural icon — he wasn't even the King of Pop. Rather, he was just ascending to the throne. He'd had some hits (1972's "Ben," the first two cuts — "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You" — from 1979's Off the Wall), and he was ready to forever distance himself from his early years with the Jackson 5, but no one knew what to expect from him next.

Needless to say, we were all blown away with that next step. Released in 1983, Thriller was ... well, it was everything: a milestone release, a decade-defining collection of tunes, the biggest-selling album of all time and — most importantly — Michael's coronation. He was officially and forever the King of Pop, a title he held until his death Thursday (June 25) at the age of 50 and one that will probably be his forever.

Michael JacksonA sad day indeed. Michael Jackson wore many hats over the course of his long career. He was an international superstar, and he leveraged that status to dip his toes into anything that interested him. In the world of film, Jackson enjoyed unparalleled access. He worked with luminaries, artists and auteurs who shaped the course of the medium as strongly as the pop star himself did in the music world.

Jackson was a pop cultural icon and his touch will forever be felt in all facets of entertainment. Here are just a few of the stars he hitched to in film during his long and storied career. Read More...

SurveillanceFROM MTV.COM: "Surveillance" started out as a script about witches. Director Jennifer Lynch took a whack at it and made a movie about devils — the human kind. The picture is twisted and disturbing and funny, too. Lynch has pushed the material to the wall — she has a gift for violence and perversity, and she never pulls back.

A trail of brutal serial murders has wound its way across the country and now arrived in a remote, unnamed desert community. The movie begins with a recent atrocity, a man and woman slaughtered at their home. Then there's another bloodbath, out on a lonely highway, which leaves several people dead. We don't see this massacre — yet. The story really gets underway in its aftermath.

Michael Jackson E.T.Today's eBay Prop-Watch hurts, and for a variety of reasons. Like a lot of you out there, I'm pretty bummed about the loss of Michael Jackson. This is just one more reminder of the lasting impact the pop sensation will leave on all facets of entertainment. Around the time that Steven Spielberg unleashed "E.T." on the world, this companion record set was released with Jackson serving as the narrator.

I had this record. I used to listen to it nightly on my clunky, plastic Fisher Price turntable. Over the years it became more and more warped until eventually it was just another item to be discarded in the next move. The outrageously high $2,000 asking price on this auction isn't even what's upsetting here; I just miss hearing Jackson's "E.T." narration. Read More...

Avi AradEvery video game adaptation that's put on the path to the big screen leaves you hoping that this will be the one to break the crappy gaming movie curse ("The Wizard" notwithstanding). While my hope remains pinned on Mike Newell's upcoming "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," there may also be hope in the form of "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia is developing a live-action adaptation of "Fortune." Kyle Ward is to pen the script; if the name sounds familiar, that's because he was mentioned here just yesterday in association with the upcoming "Hitman 2." No director has been set, but Avi Arad, Charles Roven, Ari Arad and Alex Gartner are producing. Read More...

Michael Jackson and Brett Ratner

Michael Jackson and "Rush Hour" director Brett Ratner may not have been BFFs, but they were fairly close. They never collaborated on anything, but the normally reserved Jackson wasn't afraid to be himself around his filmmaker friend. Remember that video of the two of them together in Ratner's SUV?

Ratner is understandably saddened by the sudden and unexpected loss of his pal. In an exclusive statement to MTV News, the director had this to say: “Michael was not only a great friend, but a true inspiration in my life. I will never forget his kindness to me, and his beautiful heart. He was the best father and truly loved his children. I will miss him.”

Michael JacksonMichael Jackson was a gifted entertainer, and his loss impacts us all. The best response -- indeed the only response -- during this dark moment is to look back and consider what he's left us. It's a legacy that spans multiple mediums and all walks of life. From the millions of faceless record buyers to the high-profile Cult of Celebrity, the outpouring of grief at the loss of such an influential force in entertainment is palpable.

People from all walks are more than willing to share their fondest remembrances of Jackson. Seth Green had this to say in a statement to MTV News: "It's shocking and so sad. But for the first time in a long time, people are talking about all of the amazing things he was rather than all of the unfortunate attention he'd acquired."
