Genital mutilation! I know that got your attention. I'm not using as a means of misdirection either. Genital mutilation really does apply to the news I have to share.
You may or may not have heard, but one of the films that generated a lot of buzz at the Cannes International Film Festival this year was director Lars Von Trier's "Antichrist," starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg. That's not to say it was well-received. Or poorly received. It was certainly received however, with its shocking depictions of sexuality and graphic violence. How shocking... well let's just say that I'm not comfortable printing the gory details here.
Now a post on the popular NeoGAF video game message forums points to an article on Politiken.dk [via /Film] which reveals that a video game adaptation of the film is currently in development (translated here). A visit to "Antichrist" producer Zentropa's (founded by Von Trier) website reveals that staffer Morten Iversen is a game director; Iversen is also revealed to be presiding over the adaptation the Politiken article.
The game, titled "Eden," is described as a "hybrid thriller/adventure game set in [the] first person perspective." The translated text is admittedly rough, but it sounds as though Willem Dafoe is in some way involved and that the game's story will be set after the events of the film. There's also some mention of players being asked questions about what frightens them, with responses dictating how things play out. It's very difficult to get a clear sense of things from the translated text, but some sort of game is clearly in development.
I'm not sure what to think here. Video games are a big hobby of mine. I haven't actually seen "Antichrist," but based on what I've read and heard it doesn't exactly fit into the typical game mold. There's plenty of gore it seems, but not so much action. The slow pace of adventure games is an increasingly tough sell in a market crowded with first-person shooters, open-world sandboxes and fast-paced sports/racing games.
Do you game? Would you play a game based on "Antichrist"? What would you hope to get out of such an experience?
