Just as everyone has an opinion, a favorite meal and a nose -- albeit a fake one at times -- so too does everyone have a birthday. Even celebrities. Here at Birthday Bash, it's my mission to salute the fine actors, filmmakers and other Hollywood heroes that are celebrating their special day this week. After all, it's cheaper than mailing a cake.
Kicking off the inaugural edition of Birthday Bash are the following five Hollywood personalities...
Courtney Cox (June 15): Although she's best known for playing Monica Gellar on the hit TV series "Friends," Cox has had a wealth of other accomplishments throughout her 45 years of life. The actress had a starring role in Wes Craven's "Scream" trilogy where she met actor and eventual husband David Arquette. Further, Cox will be making a television return with ABC's "Cougar Town" in the fall.
Birthday Wishes: Here's hoping your day is a splendid one, Ms. Cox -- and, perhaps more importantly, that you and the husband don't suffer too much in "Scream 4."
John Cho (June 16): You wouldn't believe it based on the youthful roles he plays, but Cho is actually turning 37 this year. That's a far cry from the mid-twenties, marijuana-loving number-cruncher he plays in the "Harold & Kumar" films, as well as rookie Star Fleet pilot Hikaru Sulu in last month's "Star Trek."
Birthday Wishes: Like Cox, Cho will also be heading to ABC this fall in "Flash Forward," a new out-of-the-box drama that's already being touted as the next "Lost." With the bar set that high, here's hoping that Cho can match that success with his latest television endeavor.
Michael Showalter (June 17): Shame on you if you're not a Showalter fan already! The Brooklyn-based writer-actor is an integral member of "Stella," a comedy trio spawned from the earlier MTV sketch comedy series "The State." Showalter's troupe created the "Stella" Comedy Central series as well, along with everal webisodes that I won't link to because they're not safe for work or children.
Birthday Wishes: Needless to say, the "Wet Hot American Summer" actor has a twisted comedic mind. Whatever Showalter does with it next, funny is to be expected.
Barbara Broccoli (June 18): While you might not be familiar with her face or name, you're definitely familiar with her product. Broccoli is the inheritor of the James Bond franchise, serving as producer on eight 007 adventures to date. Further, she's presided over three Bond actors in her lifetime: Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.
Birthday Wishes: As Broccoli turns 49 this year, I've got my fingers crossed that she continues the awesome work on the Bond films, a tradition that was reinvigorated by Craig's work in "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace." The recent news that "Frost/Nixon" writer Peter Morgan has joined the Craig-era Neal Purvus/Robert Wade writing duo only bodes well for the coming 23rd entry in the long-running "Bond" franchise.
Paula Abdul (June 19): She's a woman who truly needs no introduction, but I'll give her one anyway. Abdul has dabbled in several areas of Hollywood, from brief sojourns as an actress to an incredibly successful career as a singer. Most recently -- indeed, most famously at this point -- Abdul has been in the public eye as a judge on "American Idol," the mega-sized television event that really needs no introduction.
Birthday Wishes: If I could make any wish on Paula's behalf this year, it'd be for her continued involvement on "Idol." Sanjaya-bashing and Lambert-guessing aside, her presence there is one of the key reasons that "Idol" is such a guilty pleasure.
Be sure to come back next Monday for an all-new edition of Birthday Bash!
