Last week we brought word that "Scream" creator Kevin Williamson is back to work on the franchise, with an all-new trilogy which will bring back a number of the old characters. Which ones specifically hasn't yet been confirmed, though Williamson has already spoken with stars David Arquette and Courtney Cox Arquette. Now, "Scream" director Wes Craven has chimed in with some of his own words on the subject, in an interview with Digital Spy.
"[The Weinstein Company co-chairman] Bob Weinstein has talked to me, he's interested in me directing it. I had a brief conversation with Kevin [Williamson], I know that Kevin is writing. What I've said to Bob is I'm not closed to it, I'm not open to it, I'll be perfectly happy to read a script and tell him what I think. That's where it's at and I'm not expecting a script until August. I don't know what the premise is or anything."
It's a mouthful, and it's bursting with information. Craven is open to directing, Weinstein wants him on it, a script is coming sometime in the neighborhood of August. Craven maintains his frank tone for the entire -- and all-too-brief -- interview, revealing the the Arquettes are "virtually set" and that "everybody else will be new." This isn't the first time Craven has discussed the possibility of returning to the "Scream" franchise, but it looks like the train is finally pulling out of the station for real.
Is Craven a necessary component for any return to "Scream"? Do you fear that the original "Scream" had its moment of self-referential genre play, and it's now passed?
