Welcome to a new weekly feature that I'll be running here on MTV Movies Blog. It's more of a poll really. It is a poll. As a fan of film, I try to get myself out to the movies every weekend. Even when there's nothing new that strikes my interest, there's something to be said for the experience of watching a fictional story unfold on a screen in a cavernous shared space. The movie-going experience is something we need to remember the value of, especially as home theater setups grow larger and more impressive.
Since I'm guessing that at least a few of you share my love for the in-theater experience, I'd like to hear what moves you to head out the door and lay down $10+ for a movie ticket. So I'll be creating this series of highly unscientific polls to get an idea of what your weekend plans are. I encourage you to sound off in the comments as well, to defend your picks, to rag (respectfully please) on the selections of other and to just generally shout your love of movies to the heavens.
The two big releases this week couldn't be more different. For the action junkies in the room, look no further than "The Taking of Pelham 123," starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta. Hijackers, led by Travolta's Ryder, take over a New York City subway train with the intent of ransoming off the passengers as hostages. Dispatcher Walter Garber (Washington), as you might expect, plays the unlikely hero.
At the other end of the spectrum is the family fantasy "Imagine That." Eddie Murphy stars as a work-obsessed executive who finds himself simultaneously dealing with a sputtering career and a troubled father-daughter relationship. The solution to both problems presents itself when the young girl invites Murphy's Evan into her fantasy world, in which she is somehow able to divine the moves of the ever-shifting corporate landscape.
For those who live in New York or Los Angeles, Duncan Jones' extremely well-received sci-fi tale "Moon" enters into limited release this Friday. Sam Rockwell stars as Sam Bell, an astronaut stationed alone at a mining base on Earth's moon. As he nears the end of his three years of solitude, Bell begins to witness events which make him question his sanity. This one here is my personal pick for the week, an easy choice.
Now I want to hear from you. Are you planning to see any of these? Catching up with a previous week's release? Staying at home instead? And for you NY/LA outsiders, would you see "Moon" if you had the opportunity?
