Film and music video director Michel Gondry premiered a new project, a documentary, last week at Cannes. "The Thorn in the Heart," as it is called, nabbed enough critical endorsement to find a new home at Oscilloscope Pictures, a company co-founded by Beastie Boys member Adam "MCA" Yauch. The Beasties are also making headlines this week with the newly revealed title of their forthcoming album: "Hot Sauce Committee."
Yauch called Gondry's film "a sincere doc on a subject that is so close to [the director's] heart," according to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The documentary focuses on the "Green Hornet" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" director's own family members, following his aunt, schoolteacher Suzette Gondry, and her son. Over the course of the film, he delves into the family's secrets and their life in rural France.
Oscilloscope Pictures has been eying other non-fiction projects of late, including recent acquisitions "Dear Zachary" and "Burma VJ". The group is the New York-based film production arm of Oscilloscope Laboratories, which also houses the Beastie Boys' production studio.
"The Thorn in the Heart" was an official selection for the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes this year, a competition category which stands separate from the running for the big prize, the Palme d'Or.
