MGM may have passed on distribution rights for "Terminator Salvation," but a potential fifth sequel could return to MGM following the results of a recent legal battle. If McG's follow-up to the Memorial Day launch -- possibly set in the pre-Judgment Day present -- does land at MGM, there could be an ongoing clash between MGM and Warner Bros. to decide the fate of the series.
MGM will have first right of refusal for the fifth Terminator film, according to Variety, which cites sources claiming that MGM "has every intention of making a serious play for the franchise, potentially trumping Warner Bros., which is distributing 'Terminator Salvation' in domestic territories, and Sony, which is releasing the film overseas."
The legal situation arose from a lawsuit between MGM and Halcyon partners Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson on the heels of Orion's bankruptcy, which gave MGM a first right of refusal for the next movie. MGM passed on "Salvation," believing it to be a risky investment without California's Governator starring -- though there may still be a brief Schwarzenegger cameo.
The Christian Bale-led blockbuster is in a position to garner some serious attention this summer. Depending on the budget projections for its sequel, MGM could conceivably pass. But given the the vitality that the "Terminator" has shown property over the last 25 years, expect MGM to have their checkbook out and ready when talk of a fifth sequel begins in earnest.
Who knows? If further legal complications put things off for a couple of years, Arnold may even accomplish his mission in California and be ready for another "Terminator" installment after all.
