Martin Scorsese has already dealt with 19th century Manhattan's street toughs in "Gangs of New York," and he's responsible for many a Boston back-stabbing and head-shooting in "The Departed," but the Oscar-winning director will be flying to the moon for his next film's location -- in a manner of speaking, at least.
Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to produce "Sinatra," a Mandalay Pictures Production to be directed by Martin Scorsese. The screenplay will be written by "Field of Dreams" writer Phil Alden Robinson.
The film will focus on the legendary entertainer's personal and professional life. Sinatra, who was born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1915, was perhaps best known as a multiple Grammy Award-winning singer, but was equally accomplished as a three-time Oscar-winning actor.
"It's an honor to be involved in this film which will celebrate the amazing life and work of Frank Sinatra," said Donna Langley, Universal's President of Production. "With Phil Alden Robinson writing the screenplay and Martin Scorsese at the helm, we know that this first feature motion picture adaptation of Sinatra's extraordinary life is in the best of hands."
"My father had great admiration for the talent of the people he chose to work with, and the talented people who worked with my father had great admiration for him," said Tina Sinatra, Frank's daughter. "It is personally pleasing to me that this paradigm continues with Marty Scorsese at the helm of the 'Sinatra' film."
No actors are attached to the film yet, but given the amount of projects they've worked on recently, could a guy like Leonardo DiCaprio be towards the top of the list? Starting with the aforementioned "Gangs of New York," DiCaprio has also appeared in the Scorsese-directed "The Aviator," "The Departed" and the upcoming "Shutter Island." Seriously, what's one more team-up for Scorsese and DiCaprio -- especially for a film about one of the most celebrated performers of all time?
Who do you think should play Frank Sinatra in the upcoming biopic? Are you excited to have Scorsese and Robinson behind the scenes? Fill our hearts with song by heading to the comments section!
