If you didn't know walking into the theater that J.J. Abrams is revving up the action in "Star Trek," then you'll realize in the first five minutes. Opening with a massive space battle is one of the prime advantages the director had over past "Trek" films, and it's something he put to use.
"'Star Trek' always sort of promised the sort of adventure that it often didn't have the resources to deliver, so there was a lot of talk about stuff," Abrams told us, separating his film from those that came before. But does the infusion of action bring "Trek" closer to another blockbuster sci-fi franchise..."Star Wars"?
"That was the fun of it," Abrams explained. "[I] was trying to combine both of those elements and make a movie that wasn't like a 'Star Wars' movie but felt that it had more pace and action than certain 'Star Trek' movies had."
Alex Kurtzman, co-writer of "Star Trek," was also pushing to include the best from both worlds. " 'Trek' was always about slow naval battles," he said. "What was really cool about 'Star Wars' was it was all about dogfights," Kurtzman said. "We thought, 'There has got to be a way to combine those two things.' "
