When "Fast & Furious" raced off with an unexpectedly huge opening box office of $72.5 million, it seemed pretty much a no-brainer that the finely tuned film franchise would be back for a fifth installment. Chris Morgan, writer of "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" and its smash-hit sequel, says that a fifth movie is not only a no-brainer, but it's close to a green light.
"It seems like there will definitely be another one," Morgan told MTV News in an exclusive interview. "I just got out of a lunch with Universal, just pitching the story around. We were figuring out if we do another one, and what it would be. It has to come from the characters, so where are these characters after this film -- what are they doing?"
Those characters that Morgan speaks of are series stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. "Fast & Furious," the fourth and most recent outing in the franchise, reunited the two actors for the first time since the original movie, despite both of them having individually appeared in different installments in the property.
"I think people came to see ["Fast & Furious"] not only because it was blown out with bigger action -- and it's taking a step toward becoming a bigger action franchise now -- but people wanted to see Vin and [Paul] together again," Morgan said.
And if a fifth "Fast & Furious" film gets the official go-ahead, fans of the franchise can certainly expect another reunion with the two leading men -- Morgan maintains that another outing would undoubtedly put Walker and Diesel back in the drivers seats.
"We had been talking about [their reunion] as early back as 'Tokyo Drift,'" Morgan said. "I knew I always wanted to revisit those characters, and I think the audience did, too. That's what makes 'Fast & Furious' so cool. Not only did it happen to a subculture -- and it's easy to write the first movie off as a subculture that got exposed, and it's true, but it's more than that -- they also did a great job with characters who you want to like and who you want to follow."
