It looks like the other half of "The Matarese Circle" might not wait for those pricey rewrites to be finished, as Denzel Washington might become "Unstoppable" instead. Variety reports that Washington is in talks to reunite with Tony Scott to star as the lead in his new action thriller.
Based on a script by Mark Bomback ("Live Free and Die Hard"), "Unstoppable" is loosely based on a true story, and would star Washington as an experienced engineer who pairs up with a young train conductor to stop a runaway train. The train is carrying a cargo of toxic chemicals, and as we all know what happens when an unstoppable force hits an unmoving object such as an entire city.
This would be the fifth film for Washington and Scott, and the duo have a pretty good record for solid action flicks such as "Crimson Tide" and "Man on Fire." Oddly, this would be the second one to feature a train, as they're fresh off "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" which hits theaters on June 12.
"Unstoppable" is set to begin filming this fall, which does make Washington's part in "The Matarese Circle" a little more uncertain. David Cronenberg told us that neither Cruise or Washington was officially signed and while the film is still in the writing stage, it may have a whole new set of leads by the time it films.
Does "Unstoppable" sound like a solid action film, or does the plot sound too cheesy for an actor like Washington?
