Michel Gondry is one of the few directors on the market who is sought after both for his full-length and music video direction. The Oscar winner, whose next big project will be Seth Rogen's "Green Hornet" movie, has directed videos for Beck, The White Stripes, The Rolling Stones and most famously Björk, all of whom are represented on his new DVD retrospective, "Michel Gondry 2: More Videos."
"There is nothing more exciting for me than viewing the animation shots," Gondry said in a press release. "There is a feeling of trying a new (legal) drug as the condensation of hours of work become seconds of moving things."
Gondry's quirky animations and innovative surrealist blendings of basic live action elements is showcased on the volume in videos such as Radiohead's "Knives Out" and Michael Andrews and Gary Jules' "Mad World."
"It could be called 'Around Before,' since before there were other videos that no one remembers, and after before, which is now, there are new videos," Gondry suggested.
Special features on the new volume include Gondry playing drums with Booker T and the "Simpsons" parody of his White Stripes video, as well as Gondry's YouTube-famous video of the director solving a Rubik's Cube with his feet.
Anyone impressed by Gondry's sense of humor constructing basement-budget renditions of famous movies scenes in his 2008 Jack Black and Mos Def movie "Be Kind, Rewind" should definitely check this out. Gondry's a master of accomplishing brilliant special effects with the simplest of low-tech strategies, and the menu on this DVD release is a great introduction to his portfolio.
