Alex Proyas will be the first to admit that his film “Dark City,” which fizzled at the box office, took years to find its audience on DVD. Since its release in 1998, though, his story about a nightmare reality faced by an amnesiac trapped in a strange city has absorbed a cult following. Now, the director behind “Knowing” and “I, Robot” may actually get a chance to make a sequel.
“I always thought it would be intriguing to have Rufus [Sewell], who was the hero in the first one, be the bad guy,” Proyas told MTV News. “He should turn nasty because he’s got unlimited power. That’s something I’d like to explore.”
The ideas have surfaced since he originally wrote “Dark City.” Read more...

Back in January, we brought you the news that Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford had joined Joss Whedon's highly anticipated horror film, "Cabin in the Woods." The film has been surrounded in secrecy, and the addition of two older male actors was the first sign that this wasn't just horror as usual.
But now the casting has taken a more predictable turn with the addition of some pretty young things -- a staple of any horror film. Kristen Connolly ("Revolutionary Road") Chris Hemsworth ("Star Trek"), Anna Hutchison (TV's "Go Girls"), Fran Kranz ("Dollhouse"), and Jesse Williams ("The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2”) have signed up to be terrorized by Whedon and Drew Goddard. Their roles remain secret, as does whatever will be terrorizing them. Read more...

When you're a double Oscar-winner like Sean Penn, you don't exactly have much to prove anymore ... except maybe that you've got a sense of humor, or that you could hold your own against MTV's Greatest Badass. According to Variety, Penn has decided to try the latter and star in Universal's thriller "Cartel," which will be directed by newcomer Asger Leth and scripted by Peter Craig.
Penn will play Ed Marker, who journeys south to protect his son after his wife is brutally murdered in the gritty, dangerous world of Mexican cartels. Interestingly, the film was originally remake of the 1993 Italian film "La scorta," which followed four cops struggling to guard a special prosecutor from the mob bosses he was trying to bring to justice. But the film evolved into an action thriller for Penn, which suggests that he really wants to delve into the world of badass cinema. Read more...

As movie studios often declare before the audio commentaries on their DVDs: The views and opinions of actors do not necessarily reflect ours. And now, just a few weeks after her “Miss March” co-stars gave us advice on how to score hot chicks, certified hottie Raquel Alessi is eager to insist that they don’t reflect her views, either.
“Oh my gosh,” blushed the star when we spoke to her Monday, just a few days before “Miss March” hits theaters this weekend. “I think that, maybe, there might be a better way to get a girl’s attention besides grabbing her boobs.” Read more...

FROM NEWSROOM: Here's an unsolicited piece of advice: If you're trying to maximize your face time with a celebrity, arrange for the interview to occur in a confined space, preferably one that is moving and which his or her publicist cannot access. Mission accomplished this morning, as the MTV News gang somehow convinced Dwayne Johnson to fit his ginormous frame into a New York City taxi for 20-plus minutes!
The setting for the interview wasn't completely out of left field, by the way. Johnson plays a cab driver in his new flick, "Race to Witch Mountain."

FROM NEWSROOM.MTV.COM: Russell Brand is a recovering sex and heroin addict. He's been kicked off the BBC thanks to a poorly received prank call last year. Oh, and then there's the time he showed up dressed as Osama Bin Laden at his old MTV gig back on September 12, 2001. That one didn't go over well at all.
So maybe I wasn't completely surprised when our shoot with him this afternoon went bonkers. Russell is at his best when he's off the cuff, just riffing with strangers, so we decided to throw him right into a mess of people. To my knowledge, we conducted the first interview ever to take place in an actual working MTV elevator today. And yes, Russell struck up awkward and amusing chats with security men and every lovely young lady who happened to stroll in.

Did "Dark City" rock your world (I swear that's my last "Rock of Love" reference in this blog) as much as it did mine? Well if it did then you'll understand why it took me about a nanosecond to say yes when the gang at Summit asked if I was interested in moderating an event with director Alex Proyas.
This guy's got the chops. "Dark City," "The Crow," hell even "I, Robot" was kick-ass entertainment in my opinion (yeah I know it's not for Asimov purists but come on...). Proyas' latest is a creepy as hell Nic Cage thriller called "Knowing." I got a chance to see it last week and it delivers more than enough jolts to make you scream for your mommy and beg for mercy. Oh and it's got an ending that'll leave plenty of room for conversation afterwards.
So come on out to the Apple Store in Soho Tuesday night (7PM) in New York if you can. It'll be you, me, and Mr. Proyas. I'll have questions. You'll have questions. Hopefully he'll have a few answers. Come on over! Here athe details on the location.

In last year’s hit comedy “Role Models,” Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott played two ne’er-do-well energy drink salesmen forced into a youth mentoring program called Sturdy Wings. There they met Augie, a medieval role-playing enthusiast and Ronnie, a dirty-minded bundle of pre-teen energy. In between the hijinks and boob jokes, all four of them end up learning a few lessons -- and the movie became one of 2008’s highest grossing R-rated comedies.
And this being Hollywood, where every success is destined to be plumbed for possible sequels, spin-offs and any sort of ancillary tie-in (videogames! breakfast cereal!), the writer/director David Wain has been discussing a second “Role Models” movie. Read more...

FROM MTV.COM: After the big opening weekend that Zack Snyder and his cast just enjoyed, Hollywood execs would typically be spending Monday morning peppering their voicemails with the word "sequel." But since the "Watchmen" universe is built upon a unique mix of elements that are sacred, satirical and sequel-proof, the graphic novel's fanbase insists it could never happen. And as of the moment, the people behind the film agree that we'll never watch the "Watchmen" in a new adventure.
"I know that I wouldn't have anything to do with it," Snyder told the New York Times recently.

A live-action TV series set in the “Star Wars” cosmos has been an elusive, tantalizing prospect for years. News of the potential production first surfaced in 2005 while George Lucas was promoting “Revenge of the Sith.” Work on the “Clones Wars” animated feature film and Cartoon Network series, though, took creative precedence. In late 2007, Lucas revealed that he and his team were about to begin writing scripts for the live-action show. Now MTV News has learned that casting for the series is currently underway.
During the junket for the Nicolas Cage thriller “Knowing,” star Rose Byrne let slip that Team Lucas is casting a wide net for actors to join the show. “A lot of my friends have been auditioning for it,” she said. Read more...
