Orlando Bloom may have kept a lower profile after "Pirates of the Caribbean" than his costars, but he's making up for it this year. He's in the middle of filming Mark Ruffalo's "Sympathy for Delicious" which has him playing a hard rock singer, and he's playing a border guard in the sci-fi thriller "The Cross." Now he's looking to join the ensemble cast of "Main Street," adapted from one of Horton Foote's final screenplays.
Andrew McCarthy, Ellen Burstyn, Patricia Clarkson and Colin Firth are already signed to star in the indie drama, which will be directed by John Doyle.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Street" centers on a group of people in a small North Carolina town, who are shaken up when a stranger arrives. The main character (presumably the stranger) still uncast and described only as "a young girl." But Bloom's role has been revealed -- he'll be playing a small town police officer. It's a little difficult to picture the elven Bloom as a policeman, but stranger casting has happened. It's set to start shooting in Durham, N.C. next month.
Foote's plays and scripts were once described as "quiet stories about quiet people", which certainly fits what we know of "Main Street" so far. He's been behind some fantastic films such as "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Tender Mercies", and the Gary Sinise, John Malkovich version "Of Mice and Men." This is definitely a film to watch out for -- and a good one for Bloom to prove his acting chops on.
Are you craving for more Orlando? Does this whet your appetite?
