While visions of "Anchorman" and "The 40 Year Old Virgin" might dance in your head at the thought of Steve Carell and Paul Rudd reuniting, you should resist them, and try to concentrate on this film instead, as it's taken a long and painful road to the big screen. According to Variety, Jay Roach ("Meet the Fockers") is finally getting his "Dinner With Schmucks after numerous cancellations caused by the Paramount-DreamWorks divorce, and the departure of original star Sacha Baron Cohen.
It's finally found new life at Paramount, with Rudd and Carell coming aboard to star. The film is a remake of the 1998 French film "Le Diner de cons" and centers on a group of men who have a weekly habit of having a dinner party, and inviting the most pathetic and idiotic guests they can find.
Once the guests leave, they have a grand old time mocking them, and deciding who is the king idiot. One fateful week, one of the party organizing schmucks finds the most pathetic and stupid man of all -- but after suffering a back injury, ends up trapped with the man all night long.
Much slapstick follows as Mr. Pathetic tries to assist the injured man, and ends up making everything worse. You can guess which actor is playing which part, can't you?
Rudd and Carell are clearing their schedules in order to begin shooting the film in October, which is no small task given their A-List status and prior commitments. But financing of the film has been precarious, and three studios are financing it. If everyone isn't set to film, the whole thing can fall through again, and still could, unless everyone decides to pay their part of the dinner bill.
MTV readers, are you excited to see Carell and Rudd pair up again? Or would you prefer they break away, and do something that doesn't involve an Judd Apatow veteran?
