Keira Knightley seems determined to throw off her corsets and historical typecasting. Earlier this year, she signed on to a contemporary thriller with Colin Farrell, and now she's taking a step into that final frontier. According to Variety, Knightley will star in Fox Searchlight's "Never Let Me Go" with Andrew Garfield and Carey Mulligan. Mark Romanek ("One Hour Photo") will direct from a script penned by Alex Garland ("28 Days Later").
The story revolves around three adults who grew up cloistered in a boarding school, with no contact or knowledge with the outside world. Their sheltered existence is shattered when they discover that they are clones grown for the sole purpose of organ donation.
Unfortunately, this storyline was done not too long ago with "The Island," which already bore a rather striking resemblence to 1979's "Clonus." So the question is, what will this film offer to the clones-destined-for-organ-harvest genre? Are clones ever used for anything else in science-fiction? Could we have a do over of "The Clone Wars" instead?
The film begins shooting in April in London and Norfolk, which means we might see at least one extra Knightley running around England next month. Let’s hope they put her and her fellow co-stars in something a little more flattering than the white jumpsuits sported in those other clone movies.
MTV readers, what do you think of Knightley trying out sci-fi? Does this sound too much like "The Island"? Is it creepier when you consider her first role was as Natalie Portman's double in "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace"?
