Itâs official: Ellen Ripley is the most badass female movie character of all time. So now the only question that remains is a simple one: Will we ever see her again? âYou know, Fox was going to do another one,â Sigourney Weaver said to us recently while accepting Ripleyâs honor. âThey had it written. Joss Whedon wrote it.â
As Weaver remembered it, however, the script from the âBuffy the Vampire Slayerâ mastermind just didnât rock her world. âIt took place on earth,â she explained. âWhich, I have to say, just really didnât interest me. And I just felt that every time we went out there, we needed to have a really original piece.â
Which is a shame, because Weaver said that at the time she was perfectly willing to take on the Aliens once again. âI was all for going back to the original planet; I thought that would be interesting,â she explained. âBut I was alone in that; we couldnât really agree on what would be interesting.â
Soon afterwards, Fox turned their attention to casting a different leading character opposite the Alien, and Weaverâs days as Ripley may have been shut down for good. âOnce they were committed to âAlien vs. PredatorââŚâ she trailed off. âIf you donât respect the creature - I havenât seen them - but it just becomes too hum-drum.â
Still, Weaver told us that although she isnât sitting by the phone these days, she does feel like Ripley still needs a proper send-off. And if somebody could ever write a great Alien script (that presumably wasnât set on planet Earth), sheâd be willing to read it.
âEven in twenty years, if someone came to me and said, âThis is the story, and itâs a really interesting story using that worldâ [Iâd do it]. I think itâs an amazing saga,â the 59-year-old actress reasoned. âI donât sit around thinking, âOh I want to do another Alien,â but it does feel slightly unfinished to me. But that has a lot to do with Fox, so it wouldnât surprise me if another generation at Fox, looking at what they have, would [make it work].â
âThere have been lots of âAlienâ impersonators, but there is something about [that first] one,â she said of Ripleyâs original film, as well as the franchise it spawned. âI just donât feel that itâs quite finished.â
Would you like to see one more Alien film? Or are you happy with the legacy of Ripley as it stands?
