Less than a week before what could become the crowning achievement of his meteoric comeback--an Oscar win for Best Actor--Mickey Rourke has been temporarily brought back down to earth as his favorite dog takes a trip to the Big Doggie Day Care in the Sky. Loki, Rourke's 18-year-old Chihuahua terrier mix, died early Tuesday morning.
Anyone who knows anything about "The Wrestler" star knows he’s a sucker for the diminutive pooches. Before Loki passed away, Rourke had four Chihuahuas, though he’s had as many as twelve throughout his life. The first was a gift from his ex-wife Carré Otis. When another of Rouke’s Chihuahuas died in 2006, Hollywood casting director and former love interest Bonnie Timmermann wrote a children’s book about the dog called, “Chocolate at the Four Seasons.”
At the Golden Globes last month, Rourke stayed true to his reputation for loving canines, giving a Best Actor acceptance speech in which he said, “I’d like to thank all my dogs, the ones who are here and the ones who aren’t here any more, because sometimes when a man’s alone, all you got is your dog.”
How’s Mickey holding up through all this? TMZ caught up with the actor last night outside New York’s trendy Waverly Inn just hours after Loki’s death. Rourke nuzzled a stranger’s dog, smoked a cigarette dangerously close to the furry guy’s ear, but in the end couldn’t come up with words to express his sorrow.
