There must be a rule that if you star on an NBC comedy, you have to play second-fiddle to CG chipmunks -- or maybe it's a rule that if Jason Lee does it, every guy should. One or the other has Zachary Levi ("Chuck") joining Lee and Cameron Richardson in "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel." The sequel will be directed by Betty Thomas, who replaced Tim Hill in December.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levi will play cousin of Lee's character, Dave, who somehow gets tangled up in singing chipmunk hijinks. Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney return to act as the chipmunks' voices.
The sequel also introduces the Chipettes, the female rival group of the Chipmunks. If you're old enough, you might remember that they were introduced in the 1980s cartoon. (They were a low point even to my extremely young and unbiased eyes.) Neither Brittany, Jeanette and Eleanor have been cast yet. Maybe they could look to some NBC comedies for the actresses?
MTV readers, did you enjoy the first "Alvin and the Chipmunks" enough to want a sequel? Are you into watching the adventures of Levi and the Chipettes? And just how many singing chipmunks are there in the world, anyway?
