Here's one of those stories that will make you wonder if Hollywood really has run out of ideas. According to Variety, Warner Bros is bringing the Hanna-Barbera cartoon "Tom and Jerry" to the big screen as a live-action/CG hybrid, with an eye to turning it into a franchise.
Previously, they announced plans to do the same with "Yogi Bear," and Robert Rodriguez has been attached to a remake of "The Jetsons" since 2007.
Eric Gravning is penning the script, which will be an origin story for the feuding cat-and-mouse. If you ever wondered how they met and why they hate each other (other than, you know, being natural enemies) this movie will answer all your questions.
However, this film will also patch up their rivalry by stranding them in Chicago, and forcing them to work together to find their way home. (Dan Lin, producer of "Tom and Jerry," really has a thing for origin stories and reboots -- he is also the producer behind Warner Bros "Terminator: Salvation" and "Sherlock Holmes.")
It seems to me that the fun of "Tom and Jerry" was their pure unadulterated hate towards one another, and explaining it away defeats the point. If they patch up their rivalry to survive the streets of Chicago, how can you ever make a sequel? Have I thought about this too much already?
