By the time you read this, "The Extra Man" might already be shooting. Variety reports that Katie Holmes, Paul Dano, Kevin Kline, and John C. Reilly have signed on to the independent comedy based on Jonathan Ames' overlooked novel by the same name.
Directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, "Extra Man" follows a failed playwright (played by Kline) who makes his living as a male escort for rich, lonely widows on the Upper East Side. He finds himself acting as a mentor to Paul Dano's troubled and aspiring playwright.
The book was very funny and flamboyant, with the young playwright dabbling in the transvestite social scene while trying to survive his eccentric, old lady escorting roommate. Whether or not the adaptation will keep the drag queens is another matter, but let's hope so.
Variety is silent as to what characters Reilly and Holmes will play in the film. Somehow, I suspect that every member of this talented cast will end up playing second fiddle to Holmes, who will be photographed by paparazzi from the first day of shooting to the last. Hopefully, the film can survive the continued madness that is TomKat (are they still calling them that?), and be known for its gigalos and (possible) transvestites instead.
Intrigued by "The Extra Man"? Looking forward to seeing any particular members of the cast? Let us know your thoughts on this project in the comment section!
