McG is leaving post-apocalyptic landscapes and Terminator models behind, and heading out to sea. According to Variety, he will be directing "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo" for Disney. Studios have been vying to snag the red-hot director after he wrapped "Terminator: Salvation," and Disney finally won his valuable time by adding a colon to the title. Or by paying him $8 million against 7% of the gross. Either way, it's good to be McG!
"Nemo" is being fast-tracked by Disney, and is shaping up to be a family friendly film. It won't be a remake of Disney's 1954 classic, nor will it be a fresh take on Jules Verne's classic novel. Instead, this is an origin story for the famous submarine captain, with an original script by Bill Marsilli that will use characters from Verne's novels.
We'll see him build his incredible submarine, the Nautilus, and probably discover what drives him to attacking British warships. (Verne gave some clues in his lesser known "20,000 Leagues" sequel "The Mysterious Island" which reveals Captain Nemo's secret lair.)
Disney has had a lot of recent success with ocean tales with really long titles (A little trilogy called "Pirates of the Caribbean" comes to mind) and the project seems like a winner even at this early stage. In fact, I will even predict that "Nemo" will cause a frenzy for steampunk costumes that will dislodge Jack Sparrow and his eyeliner in the eyes of the cosplayers. We'll
keep you posted as to who will land the role of THIS famous sea captain.
MTV readers, are you intrigued by McG directing a Captain Nemo movie, or will your heart always belong to Captain Jack Sparrow? Who would you like to see at the helm of the Nautilus?
