Last month, we broke big news on John Watersâ bizarre, top-secret script treatment blueprinting the upcoming âHairspray 2.â The details were so weird, in fact, that as news spread across the Web some people thought composer/producer Marc Shaiman was joking.
Naturally, we had to take the story to the man himself, âHairsprayâ director Adam Shankman â who not only confirmed it all, but also told us about a title possibility and the big-name star who wonât be returning when the sequel hits theaters in July 2010.
âItâs crazy,â Shankman laughed. â[The treatment] is amazing, but itâs crazy. There are things in there that I was like âCan we do that?â Itâs real John Waters-y stuff, and it was more like a sequel to his movie than to our movie. Which I love, because then that becomes re-interpreted.â
Shankman admitted that while Waters does indeed want squeaky-clean Zac Efron to take acid (âor something like thatâ), the director will likely yank out that controversial story detail before they go to script. âI think thatâs probably part of the treatment that wonât get used. And in the treatment, [Efronâs drug use] is an accident,â he said, explaining that he also wonât be asking the âHigh School Musicalâ star to have trippy conversations with the acne on his forehead. âThatâs the kind of stuff where youâre like: âYeah, I donât know if thatâs going to work.ââ
The director (whose Adam Sandler comedy âBedtime Storiesâ hits theaters Christmas Day) did say, however, that heâll most likely keep John Travoltaâs weight-loss storyline. âIt has Edna getting hooked on diet pills,â he said of the parts he liked about Watersâ treatment, including a possible title. âLetâs put it this way: Itâs called âHairspray 2: White Lipstick.â [Thatâs a] butch title. Thatâs what the treatment was called!â
As die-hard Waters fans know, his original title for 1998âs âHairsprayâ was âWhite Lipstick,â named after the Sixties fashion fad.
Rumors have been swirling for months that John Travolta doesnât want to don the fat suit again, but Shankman was quick to shoot them down: âThatâs not what he said. Heâs like âNo, just keep going. And if itâs funny, Iâll do it.ââ
The director did admit, however, that one person who most likely wonât return is the evil Velma Von Tussle. âYeah, probably [no Michelle Pfeiffer],â he revealed. âNot because we didnât love her, but because we just thought different adversaries [would be necessary].â
âThereâll be a change in villains,â he explained, likely also subtracting Brittany Snow, who played Pfeifferâs daughter in the hit 2007 flick. â[Watersâ treatment] is ideas that weâre just going to pick and choose from, and weâll see what happens with it.â
Oh, and hereâs one last interesting tidbit: Although it is known that the film will use the Vietnam War as a backdrop, itâs not Zac Efronâs Link Larkin whoâll be drafted.
âNo, it wasnât Zac,â Shankman said, before catching himself. âWow, youâre getting a lot out of me for something I said I wouldnât talk about.â
Are you as sad as I am that Zac wonât be taking a far-out trip in âHairspray 2â? Or is Shankman making the right call?
