The nominations are in. Now let’s nit-pick, shall we? Actually no, I’m going to begin this season of awards prognostication and analysis (the Globes nominations are after all the unofficial kick-off party) with a wholly positive look at what the Globes did right.
Five things they got right this morning:
-- Here’s to some love for the funniest movie of the year, “Tropic Thunder.” Cruise is a pleasant surprise (though I actually thought he was one of the weaker parts of the film, a little too broad even for a film like this) and Downey is a stroke of genius. It’s a performance that killed the first time and holds up on repeated viewings. And while we’re on the topic of comic turns that needed to be acknowledged, I’m thrilled to see that James Franco make the cut for “Pineapple Express” too.
-- I never really got the whole Penelope Cruz thing. Maybe it’s because I never saw much of her early work and focused too much on her mangled pronunciations in forgettable Hollywood misfires (Remember “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”? I do!) but that all changed “Vicky Christina Barcelona.” She’s a live-wire in this one, stealing scenes from the likes of Javier Bardem and Scarlett Johansson.
-- There isn’t a missed beat in the Best Actor (Drama) list. These five men knocked it out of the park. Each and every one. Pitt’s performance in “Button” has largely been overlooked by critics. Glad to see the Globes liked it even if they just probably wanted him on their carpet.
-- And a special mention for Rourke. I’ve been banging this drum for months. I want Mickey up on that stage, chihuahua in hand if need be.
-- The most eclectic original song category I can recall has me giddy at the prospect of some of these folks performing at the Oscars if the list is similar there. Imagine a night where we’re treated to performances by Bruce Springsteen, Miley Cyrus, AND Clint Eastwood. Best awards season EVER.
What do you think? What are you excited about seeing at this year's Golden Globes?
