Tomorrow the hotly-anticipated Golden Globe nominations will be announced, and with that comes the same question that is asked every single year…who the hell is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) that decide who wins and who loses at the Golden Globes?
One of the big differences that separate the Golden Globes from the Oscars is the simple fact that the nominees and the winners are not decided by fellow actors and directors, but instead by a group who call themselves the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
As you know, for years the HFPA have been at the butt-end of jokes in Hollywood, with many asking what qualifies the members of the HFPA to judge some of the finest actors and directors in the world? What do they do? What do they know about film? And why are some members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association neither foreign nor members of the press?
In recent years, the Golden Globes have become as big, if not bigger than the Oscars, and last year I was lucky enough to attend both events. While both are great events full of glitz and glamour, I couldn’t help but feel that the Golden Globes was the "cooler" of the two.
Now don't get me wrong, I love the Oscars. As a kid I used to stay up glued to the television set on Oscar night. Everything from the golden Oscar himself to the red carpet glamour and Jack Nicholson sitting front row with his shades on, the Oscars are undoubtedly the most prestigious awards show in the world.
But...the Golden Globes was that little bit more fun (plus they serve booze at the Globes). Both after-parties are amazing. At the Oscars you're guaranteed to see a lot of old Hollywood types schmoozing awkwardly with each other…at least at the Golden Globes there’s a chance you’ll see Mickey Rourke making out with Lindsay Lohan. And you have to admit, having some small-time journalist from Austria called Klaus who writes for some unknown movie magazine called "At Ze Movies" deciding whether Brad Pitt, Sean Penn or even Heath Ledger should take home an award this year, is a little absurd.
But there is a plus side: the Golden Globes have a great variety of categories. For example, Best Comedy -- something unfortunately lacking from the Oscars line-up -- which means that a film like "Tropic Thunder" (arguably one of the funniest films in years) will actually get recognized. At the Oscars, I doubt Ben Stiller will even be invited.
