Audiences seem a little tired of loud Eddie Murphy comedies -- but while they steered clear of "Meet Dave," they might just be willing to line up for an established brand like "The Nutty Professor."
At least, that is what Universal and Imagine Entertainment are hoping for because according to The Hollywood Reporter, they're in the early stages of developing yet another sequel. An open call is out to writers to come up with something zany, picking up where "The Nutty Professor 2: Meet the Klumps" left off.
At this point, Murphy is not officially attached, and his involvement is completely dependent on the script, director, and other elements. It's doubtful a third movie would go ahead without him -- but we've seen plenty of direct-to-DVD sequels that switch up their actors with nary a problem. I think it's pretty likely that Murphy would happily reprise his role as Sherman Klumpp, as he's fond of sequels (he didn't hesitate to sign on to "Beverly Hills Cop 4," after all), fat suits, and movies where he plays most of the cast.
Moviegoers do love comforting, established characters like Murphy's gentle professor -- but does anyone else wish he would do a comedy where he doesn't play multiple characters in layers of make-up? His comedies are becoming so similar that I honestly thought there already was a third "Nutty Professor." I wish he'd return to the smart, edgy comedies that made him a star, and leave the goofy fare behind.
Readers, are you in the mood for a third "Nutty Professor" film? Should Murphy steer clear of sequels and comedies, and try to win another Oscar nomination?
