It's a love triangle you never thought you'd see onscreen. According to Variety, Steve Martin has joined Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin in an untitled romantic comedy written and directed by romantic-comedy veteran Nancy Meyers.
Meyers and Martin go way back, as she wrote and produced both of his "Father of the Bride" films.
All we have to go on, story wise, is that Baldwin and Martin play rivals, vying for the affection of Streep. It's certainly a talented cast, and Baldwin is a hot property thanks to his role on "30 Rock."
To be honest, I'm glad to see an older woman be the center of a love story for a change -- I seem to remember Meyers' "Something's Gotta Give" being wildly popular with audiences for precisely that reason. And horror of horrors, Baldwin is actually younger than Streep, which proves Meyers enjoys mocking the older man, freakishly younger woman pairings that are the standard in so many movie romances.
Still, you can't help wishing that Martin would go back to his bitingly funny ways, and leave the world of family comedies and fluffy romance behind. Wouldn't you love to see him write another comedy like "Bowfinger" or "The Jerk"? If he's going to do romantic-comedies (and they do seem to be a preoccupation of his), couldn't he be lured into one written by Judd Apatow?
It's your turn, readers -- feeling warm and fuzzy at the thought of this cast in love? Looking forward to seeing Martin and Baldwin verbally spar? Or do you too wish for the glory days of Martin?
