There's not a day that passes that Guillermo del Toro isn't in the trades. When does he sleep? When does he eat? I don't know, but I want whatever it is that keeps him speeding through the movie business. According to Variety, he's reuniting with his friend Juan Antonio Bayona, who just got the directing gig on Universal's "Hater."
You probably remember Bayona's name from "The Orphanage," the Spanish horror film released earlier this year.
"Hater" is an adaptation of David Moody's soon-to-be-published novel, a thriller about an inexplicable epidemic of violence. Perfectly normal and happy individuals go on killing sprees overnight, murdering their loved ones without a thought. Obviously, the world becomes a pretty unpleasant place to be. (I have to say, "Hater" tops off a pretty dark week of film announcements. It looks like we'll be enjoying a post-apocalyptic and murderous trend for the next few years. A sign of the times, I suppose.)
The project landed at Universal under del Toro's first look deal, and the scriptwriting job was assigned to Glen Mazzara. Del Toro was interested in taking the director's chair himself, but his duties on "The Hobbit" have prevented that. So he's done the next best thing and stepped back to produce, and given the job to his talented friend. This will be Bayona's English language debut, and undoubtedly the first of many studio pictures to come.
So, excited to see del Toro and Bayona pair up again? And how eager are you to line up for another movie that sees hundreds of people wiped out by a mysterious force?
