It didn't take a genius to figure out that Steve Carrell's "Get Smart" remake would end up a franchise. I remember seeing the first promo at Comic-Con 2007, before it was replayed into numbing oblivion, and knowing it was not going to be the only one. People were going too nuts for it. And Carrell was just too perfectly cast as Agent Maxwell Smart.
Warner Bros has only just started mobilizing the sequel, so it's uncertain as to whether the rest of the cast will return. But Anne Hathaway already told MTV that she'd love to reprise her role as Agent 99. And surely they can write a return for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson? He needs a break from Disney movies!
The "Smart" sequel deal is a bit of a bonus for Carrell, who inked a three-year, first-look deal with the studio. Carrell plans to recruit just about everyone he's ever worked with in the comedy business, with an eye to producing movies as well as starring in them. Since he's worked with everyone from "The Daily Show" to Judd Apatow, there's no telling who he might bring to the big screen.
So, what do you think? Ready for Carrell to reprise his role as Agent Smart? Or was it only funny the first time around?
