Even for someone who's grown up in the fresh-faced Disney-verse playing good-girl parts, the allure of becoming a werewolf is hard to deny -- so Christy Carlson Romano is putting in fangs and freaky-looking contacts for "Wolvesbayne."
"It's really cool," she said. "The special effects are huge, and the people who did the 'Buffy' makeup," Drac Studios, who also handled the upcoming "Watchmen" movie, "did it, so the makeup is looking great."
Known for her parts in the Disney shows "Even Stevens" (co-starring with Shia LaBeouf) and "Kim Possible," Romano is trying to step out from her kid-friendly past. "Now all my fans are in college and they're happy to see me do stuff like this," she said.
With "Wolvesbayne," which she shot in Lafayette, Louisiana, she co-stars with Jeremy London ("Party of Five"), Yancy Butler ("Witchblade"), and Mark Dacascos ("Brotherhood of the Wolf"). Romano and London's characters are werewolves, while Butler and Dacascos are vampires, but this is no "Underworld." In this scenario, the werewolves are forces of good, and the vamps are evil. (Despite that setup as a hero, London's gotten some tabloid trashing for allegedly beating his wife; Romano says that "none of that stuff happened, if you do your research. I completely have his back. He's a great guy.")
Until "Wolvesbayne" comes out next year, Romano's playing dual roles as Kate Monster and Lucy the Slut in "Avenue Q" on Broadway, you know, the show with simulated puppet sex. "I'm in the puppet world right now," she laughed. "You should come to 'Avenue Q' and see what I do." And when she recently took a peek at a naked Harry Potter in "Equus," she got a taste of what doing more adult roles could mean for former child actors such as herself.
"James Lipton was sitting to my left," she said. "And I go, 'I might giggle at the nudity, I hope that doesn't offend you,' and he goes, 'Would you ever do nudity?' And I’m like, 'Where am I right now? Am I "In The Actor’s Studio"?' Would I ever do nudity? I don't know, but I guess these are things you have to prepare for if you ever want to be on the Actor's Studio. And my favorite curse word. There's so many that I like. Probably 'F---.' Thanks, you heard it here first, on MTV News. And I just swore in front of a whole bunch of people I don't know," she laughed. "Should I just undress now and get it all over with?"
What makes a role an adult role? Is it the level of sex, violence, and language, or is it the content? What kind of roles would you like to see Christy Carlson Romano play?
