For his next film, "Mother and Child," director Rodrigo Garcia has wisely teamed up with Hollywood's favorite trio -- Alfonso Cuaron ("Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"), Guillermo del Toro ("Hellboy") and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu ("Babel"). Believe me, when these three hop on to produce a project, you should sit up and take notice of who they're favoring.
The movie spans 30 years in the lives of three women -- a 50-year-old woman, the daughter she gave up for adoption 35 years ago, and a black woman looking to adopt a baby. Casting is still underway, and given the big names of the producers, I wouldn't be surprised if it attracted a little star power.
Garcia is about to make his big studio debut at Sony this month with "Passengers," a supernatural thriller starring Anne Hathaway. But he's made a name for himself with small, character-driven films that center around female characters. (If you followed any of the buzz around the recent girl-powered release, "The Women," you know how surprising that can be to Hollywood.)
If Garcia's powerful friends and girl-friendly focus aren't enough to intrigue you, consider one of his credits: he was director of photographer on Angelina Jolie's rather legendary "Gia." Now that's a DVD that's probably sitting on the boys' shelves -- and to thank him for those scenes, how about supporting this up and coming director?
