Even as I was in the act of writing a recent article about Paul Greengrass’s new film “Green Zone,” I couldn’t help but call bs on myself. After all the quote at the heart of the article was from film co-star Jason Isaacs, who told MTV News that the flick didn’t really use a script, that Greengrass changed his direction every take, that the bulk of the movie was made up of a sort of guerilla style, high-octane game of improv.
That couldn’t possibly be right, could it?
“Yes I would say that Jason nailed it pretty nicely there,” “Green Zone” Greg Kinnear said of Isaac’s observations, which included lines like “[Paul] just throws you into the deep end.”
Much more important for Kinnear, who plays a CIA officer, however, is another one of Isaac’s proclamations – one which everyone who’s ever seen “United 93,” or “The Bourne Ultimatum,” or “Bloody Sunday” should have no problem instantly agreeing with: Boy is that Paul Greengrass some kind of brilliant.
“He’s amazing. I really like the guy and I think that as an artist he doesn’t paint with the same brush as everyone else. He has his own process – you’re sort of on your back foot when you’re working with this guy you’re not sure what’s happening day to day,” Kinnear said. “I think that’s where he wants it to be. I feel like he’s making a dynamic movie and I’m excited to be a part of it.
“It’s the first movie I have ever done with him,” he added, smiling, “and yes, I am doing his next 10.”
It’s official: Greengrass is flying from the seat of his pants with this one. And I can’t wait to see it. What about you? Excited for the film? Sound off below.
