Perhaps my choice of hitting the caps lock key when I did gave away my thoughts on this matter? The truth is I like Austin Powers. I laughed like everyone else when the first one came out and yes I may have quoted the film once or twice (but not since 1999, I swear). But I laughed a little less during "The Spy Who Shagged Me" and by the time of "Goldmember" I felt, I think like most of you, that this series had run its course.
Funny what a huge flop will do though. According to Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood, Mike Myers has begun writing a fourth "Austin Powers" flick and New Line is apparently all excited at the prospect. Here's the thing though, we already all kind of sat through "Austin Powers 4," didn't we? It was called "The Love Guru." Same jokes, different accent, right? I'm only being slightly facetious.
There is however one reason to hold out some sliver of hope for an honest to goodness funny fourth "Austin Powers": Dr. Evil. Finke says that this time out Myers is focusing on Dr. Evil rather than his hero. Let's all be thankful there is no Fat Bastard spin-off in the works. Truth be told, Dr. Evil was always the most consistently funny character in the "Austin Powers" series. His self-help group monologue ("summers in Rangoon," etc.) in the first is still kind of genius. So maybe just maybe there is room left for this franchise to continue?
What do you think? Any interest in seeing Austin Powers and Dr. Evil do battle one more time?
