Now that the first real trailer for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" has finally arrived, we went through it and analyzed its images frame by exhausting, exhilarating frame to try and figure out just what we can look forward to seeing out of our favorite wizard's sixth big screen adaptation. (Hint: There are at least four things we found that aren't from the book, including an added scene.)
You can watch the trailer for yourself right here on the Movies Blog.
But what does it all mean?
Well, for starters, like author J.K. Rowling before him, it's clear director David Yates and crew have decided to truly focus on telling Voldemort's story in this chapter of the Harry Potter legend. In fact, aside from Dumbledore, Harry, and three brief shots (one of Ron, one of McGonagall, and one of Ginny), none of our favorite characters are shown -- not Hermione, not new Potions master Horace Slughorn, not Hagrid or Draco, and most ominously, not Severus Snape, the Half-Blood Prince himself.
This first trailer, in fact, isn't really a trailer at all -- not in the sense that we've grown accustomed to, anyway. Most trailers tell you about story. This trailer, conversely, tells you about character, the character of the young orphaned wizard who grows up to be the most powerfully dark sorcerer or all-time.
It's a bold departure from most trailers (including the previous ones in the Harry Potter series), but one which immediately sets an ominous, foreboding tone. This is not your older brother or sister's "Harry Potter," Yates seems to be saying. There are real consequences here, real risks, and real danger.
But what do you think? Is the trailer what you've been waiting for? Does it leave you breathless? Or are you curious how some images (like the attack on the Burrow, or Dumbledore slipping on the ring) will fit into the overall arc of the story? No need to send a Howler -- sound off below!
