With Comic-Con having come and gone, it’s telling that what most people are still talking about isn’t what was there, but what wasn’t: No “Star Trek” teaser, no “Transformers 2” and of course, no Lexi Alexander, whose “Punisher: War Zone” was finally unveiled to the world but without its director there to support it.
The official word during the panel was that she was on her honeymoon. Now, whether you believe Harry Knowles at AICN, who was the first to call the story bogus or Jenna Busch over at UGO, who today wrote that it was real, the implication in both stories is crystal clear: Alexander is difficult, Marvel and Lions Gate are unhappy with her direction, and she has been removed from the project in at least some capacity. Her official blog, normally a veritable hive of activity, has nothing now but a picture of the “See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” monkeys.
This is an Oscar-nominated director, mind you. Doesn’t anybody in this town want to work with her again?
“I’m working with Lexi Alexander,” producer Deborah Del Prete proudly revealed exclusively to MTV News, giddy at the prospect of reuniting with her “Green Street Hooligans” partner. “I discovered her and she’s really talented.”
But what’s the project? While Del Brete was mostly mum on the details, she did reveal that the duo are “Working on a fantasy picture. There is a book, and it’s a British book. It’s not super well-known.”
“I don’t think you’ll guess what it is,” she continued, teasing, adding only that “It’s contemporary.”
So what could it be? Beats us. Chime in with your thoughts below.
In the meantime, the “Punisher” movie that everybody is now down on? Hold your tongue, Del Prete said. It’s actually, well, it’s actually pretty awesome. “Frank Miller and I both saw it, so I know more than most people do,” she insisted. “And I love it. I think it’s going to really please fans.”
What do you think? Is Alexander a good fit for the fantasy genre? Have any ideas on what the project could be? Still have hopes for “Punisher”? Sound off on your thoughts below.
