EXCLUSIVE: Five Minutes Of ‘Batman: Gotham Knight’

Sure it’s not five minutes of “The Dark Knight” but this is pretty cool nonetheless. Set between the events of “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight,” “Gotham Knight” is an anthology of six animated tales starring everyone’s favorite caped crusader. This stuff is dark and violent which is just how we like our Batman stories. And of course it’s got a slew of top notch animators and writers behind it (including “Batman Begins” co-writer David Goyer). The full movie is out on DVD on July 8th but here’s a hefty five minute chunk to whet your appetite.

What do you think? Does this rival Nolan’s vision? What’s your favorite animated incarnation of the Dark Knight?

  1. totally awesome! Thanks for posting this vid. Kevin Conroy is THE voice of Batman ^_^
  2. Can't wait to get the dvd. Kevin Conroy is THE quintessential Batman voice, but somehow feels out of place here. Why couldn't they animate the lips is English, it just looks so weird when the lips and the voice don't sync.
  3. Man, I've been looking forward to this DVD for ages, but that was just PAINFULLY dumb. Two rival mobs show up at a deserted yard, lined up single file a hundred down, say one line each ("You must die, Moroni!" "You too! Grargh!") and then everybody opens fire? REALLY?
  4. Batman and anime? You have me sold! Awesome footage!!
  5. GREAT!!!
  6. Ok, I've had high hopes for this as well, but as Pinkerton pointed out, that scene was really dumb and had some rather lame theatrics.
And it's disappointing that they're cutting corners in animation by having only the mouth moving when a character talks, which looks really weird.

But then again, as each episode is handled by a different studio, writer, character designer and director, I still have high hopes for this, especially since the trailers look so sumptuous.
  7. Not that great

I liked more the first batman cartoon back in the 90's.

That was way darker and cold. Batman there was awesome, but this one?? He seems to be on steroids, the voice of every character sucks, the only good thing is the drawing, even the animation doesn't seem that great.
  8. WWW is WORLD WIDE web not just your little corner
  9. The animation is way too choppy and you can tell it's DBZ style repeating animations. Interesting take on the batman series though. don't call it anime.
  10. uhhh, no thanks, waste of 5 minutes
  11. Finally!
I've always wanted a really sick and dark version of the animated caped crusader! Batman Beyond was excellent and so was the three episodes of the current run "The Batman", but that's still all kids stuff.

Finally, some blood gets on the cape!
  12. I agree with Pinkerton. That was totally unrealistic. I don't think it agrees with Nolan's vision at all
  13. Five over-produced mind-numbing minutes with zero story or characterization. Typical of today's entertainment. Where's Adam West?
  14. Wow what a disappointing clip, hope the other shorts on this dvd are better.
  15. It's not SUPPOSED to be realistic or agree with Nolan's vision...it's supposed to have anime-like qualities...

This is like when people compared 300 to Gladiator...
  16. For god's sake people, chill out. It's just a small clip and honestly there's no way to judge how the rest of it will be given those five minutes. And what's this with it being "unrealistic"? It's Batman. Have you ever read one of the comic books and judged it based on realism? I would hope not otherwise you are really overcritical about comics and, subsequently, Fantasy itself.
  17. I love Batman and I love anime and I think this is nothing short of brilliant.
  18. Thank you Vlad. I've read eveyone of these blogs and you seem like the only one who thinking clearly about this new Batman dvd. I think its a damn good take on the story. Kind of reminds me of Enter The Matrix a bit but that dvd rocked the ~?*$ so I dont doubt this one will do the same.
  19. this looks horrible... i thought they said something about top notch animators...
  20. I'm not into anime at ALL, but I LOVED this. So can't wait to own this next month. Batman: The Animated Series is my favorite cartoon ever, however, so I might be biased. ;)
  21. I liked the music, I thought it looked good as well.
  22. I agree with the previous posters that Kevin Conroy is THE voice of Batman. Just based on this clip the animation is okay but i am not a big fan of the anime stuff. The only great batmans are Batman: The Animated Series during the 90's and batman beyond. Batman: TAS is one of the best cartoons of all time. It was dark yet ingenius because the characters all had depth to them. Everything was perfect, from the animation of all of the characters to music score that went along with it. One of my favorites was the Joker. He was dark and cynical but at them same time i couldn't stop laughing at some of the stuff he would pull. Yes you can make his body 100x times bigger while the size of his head is about the size of a pea and make him literally fly and do all of the facy stuff, but the original that can never be duplicated is Batman: TAS from the 90's!
  23. That is just plain AWFUL.

More Dan Didio mistakes - killing DC characters
  24. I don't know why people keep bringing up the old animated series. I love it but this has little to do with it. Yeah it's animated with Kevin Conroy but this is something new. It's an experiment, not more of the same Bruce Timm cartoons. I'm just saying that gotham knight and the animated series are completely different creative works, meaning you can enjoy them both.
  25. I can't wait to see this one! And look at this -- great site with TDK clips, trailers and behind-the scenes making of stuff, and the clips are amazing quality, HD and SD too. http://www.comcast.net/thedarkknightmovie/
  26. MAN BATMAN IS THE BEST SUPERHERO OF ALL TIME. CANT WAIT TO SEE THE DARK KNIGHT. HEATH LOOKS BETTER THEN JACK WHEN HE PLAYED JOKER IN THE FRIST BATMAN MOVIE.
  27. What you have to remember is that each segment is COMPLETELY different from each other. Different writers, animators, everything. So don't jump the gun on judging batman from that single 5 minute clip.
  28. I dunno about this...It certainly isnt what I was expecting...I would rather reserve judgement until I watch the complete DVD. This clip seems a little too corny and cheesy.

Even so, it IS great to have Kevin Conroy back. BATMAN : TAS was really good, and Batman Beyond was simply outstanding. So far, they are the ONLY two true to the Batman heritage. Lets see if this one makes it there...
  29. Ahhhhh... pega na minha berinjela!!!
  30. that very intersting!
  31. Listion to all of you that reply Batman is the best superhero every, why because he is smarter that all the rest, he has more money and the plan simple fact that he is a man with no super powers but is still a superhero so just give it some time. The Dark Knight will be the best batman man movie to date and Iam sure that this will be the next best thing dc have come up with.
  32. It looks excellent and seems like a potent source for character development and making Batman what he should be.

I was also happy to see that the original voice actor, Kevin Conroy, from the original animated series is voicing Batman/Bruce Wayne again.
  33. Puta que pariu vai ser foda!
  34. Holy $?~#! Onime about Buttman!? Not on my age! ~__~
  35. there is an actual story behind this particular short and questions are raised into Batman's ethics. What u see is simply the climax. Not to mention each clip is completely different from tha rest but the stories are continuations of the one before it. Dont want to spoil it 4 anyone but I enjoyed how they explored his characted and psyche on this DVD. trust me when I say its more than just anime style, corny lines from mobsters and action. The Dark Knight = best superhero movie ever
  36. It's similar to the Animated Matrix movie that came out a few years ago. That was really cool and I like taking the same concept and giving it up to intrepretation for different visionaries.
