A ‘Harry Potter’ Mini-Movie? All Signs Point To…Maybe

Seven is the most powerfully magical number in the “Harry Potter” universe, the number of books in the series, the number of divisions Voldemort intends to make of his soul, the number of Weasley children, etc.

But it won’t be the number of movies. Already we’ve heard word that Warner Brothers plans to split the last book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” into two films. (Help us with where to break that film here.)

Could the powers that be, though, actually want a ninth?

That’s the word from the “Sunday Mirror,” which ran an item last week stating that J.K. Rowling had written a brand new Potter story that would be turned into a mini-movie starring the films’ principal cast, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson.

The article claimed that the movie would be shown as part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the new themed land at Universal Studios in Orlando.

But is it true? To put it mildly, fans at The Leaky Cauldron and Mugglenet have almost universally reacted with incredulity. It can’t be legit, can it?

First things first. I spent the better part of yesterday morning on the phone tracking down representatives from Universal Studios. After repeated calls and emails this is what they sent me this morning.

“We’re working hard to make the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort an exciting and authentic experience for our guests — but we’re not ready to talk about its development.”

That’s the official statement, such as it is. As Dumbledore himself might (and did, in fact) say, “From this point forth, we shall be leaving the firm foundation of fact and journeying together through the murky marshes of memory into thickets of wildest guesswork.”

I’m guessing this story is somewhat real.

First, the statement from Universal is patently untrue. Here’s an example of the very same people who told me they weren’t going to talk about the park, talking about the park — on the Universal homepage no less. They have a FAQ and you can even sign up for email updates.

Secondly, and we’re in real “murky marshes” here, the feeling I got from talking on the phone with reps was that something WAS going on, and that they were trying to figure out how best to spin it. I had more than one conversation end with the person I was speaking with promise to send me “information.” Not a statement, not confirmation or a denial. But “information.” Something’s going on, and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least to find out that it was a mini-movie.

And, frankly, it wouldn’t surprise me for the simple reason that I always expected it anyway. Anyone familiar with theme parks knows these sorts of things happen all the time. If you’re a fan of Disney World, think the mini-Muppet movie before their show, or Eric Idle’s little talk before “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience,” or C-3PO in the line at “Star Tours.” There has to be something to watch while waiting in line, and Harry Potter is no different.

I have no doubt that this will include mini-movies with the stars of the films, and since J.K. Rowling has been so involved with the process, I have no doubt it will include her as well.

But what are your thoughts? Does the statement add anything to your gut feelings on this? Knowing what rides are at the parks, what kind of story would make sense? Sound off below.

  1. It actually makes a lot of sense for the theme park, and I know JK has been very involved in the planning and details, so I would think if it were incorporated into a ride, attraction, etc...she would approve of it. But, that being said, I also think it will pull from the novels and not be new information. I also would bet the main stars would be willing to help out. This has been there lives, to an extent, so I would be surprised if they weren't open to it.

My question is: Where's the freakin' trailer for HBP!!!???
  2. I agree with the person above me: where's the trailer for this? twilight has already come out with thiers and that comes out two weeks after this movie. where is it?

anyway that would deffinately be really awesome. i really hope they do something like that. i've never been to disney because i've never had a reason. the theme park is now most deffinately my reason.

    :)

    thanks for the information!

  6. Well yea... I think that the mini-movie with the stars is a good idea and yea JK will be on it surely.
And about the HBP trailer... they are still working on the details i know it. The filming is over yea but just 2 weeks pass. So it's normal that the trailer isn't ready. We will wait and see :).
Wach fan made trailers then :P
  7. I hope they do as well, I don't see why they wouldn't. All thoes little things make the theme park, besides...a mini movie be awsome! Haha I'm so pshyced to go!!!

And HBP is just not ready yet... Not sure when the OOP trailer came out...but it wasn't that far from the movie release, was it? IDK I'm hoping it's on the previews of Get Smart but something tells me it won't be till the 18th of July for The Dark Knight.
  8. Anyone who's been to Disney in Orlando and has ridden the Aerosmith Rock and Roller Coaster has seen the intro "movie" with the band. I would think this is something like it, to incorporate the actors into the feel of the attraction. Makes a lot of sense and can't to see it in 2010!
  9. I hear Daniel will be buck naked and making love to a horse a la Equus in it.
  10. I really think deathly hallows should stay the same as it is because u will just kill people with the suspence. I THINK THAT U SHOULD JUST KEEP IT A WHOLE MOVIE. LOOK AT IT THIS WAY LIKE U SAID SEVEN BOOKS,SEVEN WEASLEYS, SEVEN MOVIES AND THEY ARE A BIG HIT. I CAN BARELY WAIT FOR THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE TILL NOV.21 WITCH IS SOLD OUT THE FIRST DAY IT IS IN THEATERS AND I DEFINATELY CANT WAIT FOR THE DEATHLY HALLOWS TO COME ON 2010!!!!)
