Admit it, most DVD extras are self-indulgent, ego-stroking puff pieces that — if weâre lucky — include a little illumination amid the glorification.
And we love it (and rightfully so, since so much of it has the added bonus of being cool). But itâs not for Doug Liman, who told MTV News that the bonus features on his newest DVD, âJumper,â will include glimpses into all the drama that the production could muster. And then some.
âWe had to frantically recast and start shooting while we were still working on the script,â he said of the film. âWith âJumper,â I thought we were back to the days of âSwingers.â Itâs a locked script. Weâll just go shoot it. Suddenly next thing I know Iâm back in the waters of no script, trying to figure out what we can shoot, whatâs actually been written, and figuring it out as we go along. You get to see that.
âWe had a documentary film crew follow us and we let them put whatever they wanted on the DVD, so I think itâs a much more interesting beyond [the norm],â he continued. âIt was just grueling.â
Of course, the filmâs complications extended far beyond the script, Liman admitted, confessing to MTV News his trepidation with the movieâs special effects.
âI was terrified. We couldnât afford any experts. We had to figure it out ourselves,â he said. âBut I like being terrified!â
âJumperâ is out on DVD today.
I like the cut of Limanâs jib. Do these kind of extras interest you more as a fan? Sound off below.
