On this Twilight Tuesday, I will become the latest MTV Newser to admit that I am absolutely, 100 percent, enthusiastically hooked on the “Twilight” series. A few months ago, I realized that I kept hearing the word “Twilight” around the office. So, I decided to find out where all of this buzz was coming from.
I had no idea what I was in for.
Cut to two weeks ago … I am late for meeting because I’m sitting in the corner of the newsroom, reading the last few pages of “Twilight,” the first (and hopefully most addictive, because otherwise I’m going to be late for a lot of meetings) installment in Stephanie Meyer’s series. Cut to one week ago … I’m even more hooked as I continue to read the rest of the books in the series.
Am I the only one who craves the kind of relationship had by Edward Cullen and Bella Swan? I mean, one is a vampire, the other is human, and they, teenagers (sort of), are confronted with death, immortality, and the chance that one might at any moment end the other’s life. Still, the unending, undying, unbeatable, and literally life-or-death romance between the two characters is one that I can’t help but want to further understand, and experience.
Meyer’s ability to mesh and mold our human ideals of good and evil never ceases to amaze me. Further, the complexity of Edward Cullen’s character surprises me again and again, as I am constantly reminded simultaneously of Edward’s ability to have compassion and good-will to a higher degree than most humans, and his inhumane, animalistic desire that becomes a constant battle for him. The humanization of the vampire is something that Stephanie Meyer has mastered, but she never fails to remind us that these are, as Edward names himself, “monsters.”
You can imagine my excitement when I found out that we are unveiling a scene from the “Twilight” film at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards’ preshow. And not only that, but we get to hear the words of Stephanie Meyer herself, as she gives us an intro and a taste of what we can expect. Imagining Meyer’s words and imagery put onto film is something that both scares and excites me. I’ll be interviewing Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart during our preshow, so I’m definitely looking forward to hearing their take on the books and the movie as well. I can’t believe I’m meeting Edward and Bella (or, well, in a way). In any case, I feel confident as I finish reading the series that I am forever Team Edward, but sometimes actors and directors can change things ever so slightly, so I’m interested to see how Edward, Bella, and of course Jacob look on the big screen.
Sunday’s the big day, guys. Tune in to watch my big “Twilight” interview. But first, help me out: What questions should I ask Robert and Kristen on the red carpet?
The MTV Movie Awards will air live on MTV on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, with MTV News’ “Coming Attractions” preshow kicking the evening off at 7:30 p.m. ET! Meanwhile, stay tuned to the MTV Movies Blog and MovieAwards.MTV.com.
