If you happened to catch any of the behind-the-scenes footage from the latest "Indiana Jones" film, which hit the net briefly this week, you saw star Harrison Ford practice his whip technique over and over again, training himself for the complex maneuvers needed for his stunts.
Shia LaBeouf had a similar indulgence – if not the same excuse - the 21-year-old joked when we sat down for an extended interview recently to discuss all manner of things "Crystal Skull" related.
"There wasn't a lot of down time, but when we would have down time we were sort of in these insane, remote locations. It wasn't like we got to lounge in our trailers and things like that. [But] I always had my switchblade on me. It just became my thing to do," LaBeouf confessed, revealing how he would practice flipping and opening the weapon in preparation for his scenes. "It became a nervous tic sometimes, my boredom reliever. I was always flipping my knife. I'm still addicted to it."
Which is all fine and good, of course, when you're voyaging across distant jungles. Not so good when you're voyaging across distant jurisdictions. Indiana Jones may be known as the world's greatest "obtainer of rare antiquities," but Shia, you just took smuggling to a whole new level.
"I remember doing the 'Transformers' press tour, and we're flying around the country doing this press and I'm trying to hide this switchblade! I'm trying to hide this switchblade in my luggage, flying into France. I'm trying to give it to other people to hold and put in peoples' pockets," LaBeouf laughed. "It was a really bad scene, but I got away with it!"
