Can A Man Be A Twilighter Too? One Guy’s Tale Of Being Bitten And Smitten

Twilight CoverWhile most people will always remember where they were the moment that Kennedy was assassinated or the O.J. verdict came down, Twilighters can never forget a third event: Where they were when they bought their first Stephenie Meyer novel.

Somehow, the literary phenomenon had escaped me. Much like Pinkberry or Kelis’ “Milkshake” song, “Twilight” managed to capture the hearts and minds of millions while I was obliviously living a life without it. Then in January I interviewed Miss Kristen Stewart at Sundance as part of my job, and much like any day at the “office,” we discussed upcoming projects she was excited about. MTV News ran a brief item on her remarks, and it broke the Movies Blog record for reader comments!

That night, I found myself in a Barnes & Noble, determined to track down this girly novel that Kristen had spoken so highly of, and a few thousand of her soon-to-be-closest friends seemed to equally adore. A half-hour went by as I stumbled from the “Fiction” section to “Fantasy,” from “Romance” to “Sci-Fi,” looking under the T’s for “Twilight” and the M’s for Stephenie Meyer. Being a guy, I’d be damned if I was going to ask for help from some dude in a green apron.

My cell phone rang, and the wife asked what I was doing. I had enough time to explain that B&N must not carry this obscure book, when I suddenly came around the corner to a wall of black covers with hands holding an apple, staring back at me. It was surrounded by books aimed towards tween girls. Above the shelving read the words “Young Adult.”

One side of my brain yelled, “That’s the book!” while the other screamed, “You’re a 33-year-old man in the YA section! You look like Michael Jackson! Grab the book and get outta there!”

As I cracked the novel that evening, my shame turned to shock. I was digging the book – a lot – and found myself immersed in Bella’s Forks experience. It was unlike any vampire story I’d ever read and was refreshing in its determination not to fall into the stereotypical traps of teen romance. “Twilight” was completely unlike the work of my favorite authors (Vonnegut, Bukowski, Palahniuk), yet Meyer’s prose was similarly filled with a clarity of vision, cleverness and knack for dark humor.

Now I’ve read all three books, visited the set to make sure Catherine Hardwicke is on the right path (she is), and love talking “Twilight” with all the fans who visit MTV.com and the Movies Blog regularly. Mike Welch stopped by the studio Tuesday, and he was cooler than the other side of the pillow. A Twilight Mom who knows I have a baby on the way even sent me a plaque that reads “Twilight Dad,” which hangs in my office with great pride. Thanks, Julie!

I am a male Twilighter. I am the creepy old adult who hangs around the Young Adult section. I re-make the book cover in my spare time (see photo). And like so many others, I look forward to someday remembering where I was the first time I ever got to see “Twilight” the movie.

  1. WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!! You are a REAL man. Admitting that you like these books! My hubby likes the books a lot too! One night when I came home from work, I caught my husband on the computer editing a younger picture of himself, to make it look like Edward!! He's quite the handsome guy, so he could've totally pulled Edward off! And My Dad likes the books as well! He even told me that he found a song that he thought should play at the end of the Twilight movie! It's Sarah Brightman's song called "Deliver Me".
  2. I so glad you like the books.....I think I'm speaking for most when I say......WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!!!!!Love you Larry, You Rock
  3. Larry - you are the best! I get alot of "eyes rolling" from my husband... I wish he would read it ... at least he would understand my obsession! Thanks again many times over for your coverage, and to MTV for allowing you to cover, the greatest set of books to cross generations. I think the movie will be awesome as well due to you and the other fans who have visited the sets and kept all of us up to date with details. Best of luck to you and I look forward to your posts!

Esme by default ... Alice at heart
  4. This is such an awesome story because I think we can all remember when we first got Twilight. It's such an amazing book that I'm sure that in years to come we will all be anticipating our kids being old enough to read it.

Thanks for sharing your story, and being the guy who interviewed Kristen that day. I think that if it hadn't have been you we may not have gotten such an open minded reporter and instead of researching why so many people were outraged that she said they were running through tree's (and wanted her blood!) they would of simply put it down to us all being delusional 14 year old fan girls. Yet you have realised that we all aren't 14 and all aren't female and your reporting honestly bring a smile to my face. I can be anywhere, uni, work, gym, and I think back to "spidermonkey" or "running through tree's" and I'm instantly flushed with happiness!

So thankyou Larry for having the guts to purchase Twilight from the YA section. Many guys would of run away thinking " I'll get my wife to buy it later" but you stuck it out for your fans.

    xxx
  5. Larry! You really aren't alone! And like Wendy says,"Where do we send the baby gifts?" As you well know. There are plenty of us out there that know how to gift for first babies...by first hand experience! Man...you'd never have to worry about buyin diapers again if you just asked!
Thanks again for your wonderfully fun insight into this movie. YOU RULE!
  6. What a great article! I'm so glad Stephanie has a link to your blog on her website or I never would have known about it! I'm officially a Larry Carroll fan!

It's very encouraging to know that there are 30-something men out there who are not only willing to give the Twilight series a chance, but can actually appreciate how wonderful it is. Hopefully some of them are still single, lol!
  7. Larry You rock! I feel like I've totally gotten closer to you over these past few twilight tuesday's. I just want you to know you really do hold a special place in the twilight community's heart. And if any one messes with you..well we'll create a mob on IMDB to take care of that. I mean Rob has one why not you? LOL Thanks again for everything!
  8. Larry, you seriously.... ROCK!! You're a guy who isn't ashame to say, "I love Twilight!" And that makes you a really man.
  9. Great article Larry! Congratulations on being a dad!
  10. Aww Larry, I love you! You're the best :-D Thanks for helping bridge the gap!
  11. I love your story! Thanks for sharing! Congrats on your baby!!!!
  12. Thank you Larry for bringing us the stuff that we are addicted to! :) I surf the web everyday trying to find something new to Twilight the movie. The first thing I check is the MTV blog. I have to watch the teaser trailor at least once a day. My little kids even know the basics about Twilight! Pretty sad! I have never been so excited to see a movie in my life! I feel like a teenager again! You Rock Larry!!!!!! Keep the info coming!!! We will need it to make it to the 4th book release and the movie!! Thanks MTV for bringing us Twilight information!! This blog is really informative and fun! Thanks again Larry!!
  13. Larry OME!! This was honestly a Snort-out-loud funny article. I so love that you put yourself out there like this.
*I love the brain yelling conflict Michael Jackson bit. That is hilarious.
*I thought you were SPOT ON with your comparison of SM's prose to your favorite writers' (Vonnegut's, Butowski's and Palahniuk's) as "similarly filled with a clarity of vision, cleverness and knack for dark humor." What a fabulous comment! I feel there is some sarcasm and wit in the interaction of Bella and Edward that is much more biting than people give them credit for. I found myself laughing at this several times while reading the books.
*Hey Thanks for having your backs in visiting the set to “make sure” Catherine was on the “right path” Much appreciated.
*That is so tight that someone was thoughtful enough to make and send you a special “Twilight Dad Sign”. hehe
*It is easy to be "Bitten and Smitten" by the Twilight series. I know I definitely have been.
*The question is...Has your wife been "vamped"?
*Larry I must say, you are a major asset to us Twilighters and we are SO LUCKY!
*I think you need to have your fans write in there crazy how they got “vamped” stories. It would be interesting to see how many Guy Twilighters there really are out there and the "shame" that turns to shock as they became Bitten and Smitten too.
*Your personal Twilight cover Flat-Out ROCKS!!! I love how you really took a bite! and AHEM….Totally digging the hairy arms! Hehe
*Larry I think it is you who ARE "cooler than the other side of the pillow". In fact, I dare say “Uber-Cool”.
  14. I don't see a reason why men can't fall in love with Stephenie's work, its not just about love,(and whats so wrong with love anyway) and romance, but about emotional conflicts, and hardships. Its a very origional Vampire novel, and I love her new concept of Vampires. Not entirely dark creatures, but capable of love, and compassion, and the human characteristics. I think its great that you enjoy the books. =D

Congrats on the baby. =D Proves your a man! (haha)

Reading guys comments who write things like "turn in your man card" or other bullcrap is stupid and lame, actually especially iritating. They shouldn't even post things like that, since why are they looking at this kind of stuff anyway, if their not interested?
Anyway... I really loved that song "Deliver Me" by Sarah Brightman, that a girl mentioned earlier, if you haven't listened yet, you should. =D
  15. yeah. my cuzin who's like in his late 20's suddenly wants to be a vampire. hehe.
  16. You're amazing Larry! I love your Twilight story! But atleast you didn't scream when you went in to get Twilight and saw that Eclipse was out and ran to the counter slamed the book down and yelled "It's out!" at the guy working the register. Haha! Yeah...that's my twilight story...poor guy....I had read Twilight and New Moon by barrowing them from friends, and really wanted my own copy...
But anyway! I love the whole Twilight Dad thing. It's cute!
    We love you Larry!
  17. Yayy ^^
You're so cool Larry, we love you!!!

    *sends kisses*
  18. You are not alone Larry, I got a couple of guy friends to read Twilight (with all my yapping) and they ended up loving it. One even thanked me for introducing him to the best book he's read... I had to do a double-take and was like (stupidly) "Which book?", to which he responded "Twilight, of course."

All twilighters -men and women, alike- should hold their head up high!
  19. You know Larry, I found Twilight last week, and I've already read all the books! just 1 week!
I'm completly in love if Bella&Edward'story!!!
After about two days of me talking about iy, my boyfriend decided to read it. And that's funny because he didn't accept it as easy as you. He is too much man to admit that he loved the story! And I know he did. Thank you for making me feel better about my, how can I say, my obsession about Twilght! I will for sure show this post to my boyfriend!
thank you for giving us news about the movie!
and sorry for my english! I´m from Brazil!!

    bye!bye!
  20. Larry...Congrats on awaiting the arrival of your baby! And double Congrats on probably being one of the first "Twilight Dad". That is way too cool.
Don't you just love the Twilight Moms? So did your wife ever read the series?
  21. I am so glad you love the books, too. I hope the movie attracts both genders and all age groups so we can see the sequels adapted for the screen as well. I have a question for you. When we girls read the books we fall in love with Edward and therefore want to be Bella. How does a male reader relate to the characters? Do you fall in love with Bella and want to be Edward? Do you picture yourself as one of the other characters or just see the story as an interesting read?
  22. This is awesome i love the fact that guys get into this TWILIGHT, its an awesome book i have no idea why more guys don't read it. i only have one guy friend that reads it, and he loves it just as much as you do I'm hoping soon more guys will read it.
CONGRADULATIONS!!! on the baby on the way!
    GO TWILIGHT DAD!!!!!!!!!!!!
  23. Haha, actually I know quite a few guys who read the books, see you have to force it upon them, then they get into it and grudgingly ask for the rest. I know it's one of those "Guys can't wear pink" but I say
    "REAL MEN READ TWILIGHT"

    Thank you.
  24. As a Twilight Mom I love that you are a fan & are soon to be a Twilight Dad! Thanks for sharing your hilarious personal story, Larry - it is one that many of us "older" readers share. Thanks also for convincing MTV that all things Twilight need to be covered!! We appreciate all the work you're doing! Can you believe that all of your stories have gotten women in their thirties not only to visit MTV.com frequently, but also to make comments?!? You should be proud to be singlehandedly changing the demographics of this site!
  25. COOOL cover Larry!! and the Michael Jackson comment is hilarious! good job as always ;)
  26. larry, dude it's ok your just smart and have good taste that's all. don't confuse it with weakness with a hint of creepy. i'm an 18 year old senior girl who was recently told about this craze (and love it desperatly might i add) by 15 year old freshman buddy kyle. (oh and peeople shouldn't make fun of freshmen because apparently they kmow where it's at.) so dude welcome and like i said to myself a few weeks ago.....better late than ever!
  27. Larry,
    Welcome to the Twilighters
it's kinda nice to have a male
    in the "dark side." lol
  28. Larry, this article make my date, and you do not have to worry, cause I felt weird too when I start geting info about Twilight, the movie and anythying form Twilight and they keept refering to the readers as teen fans, WHAT? a teen book? and I'm 32. YOU ARE AWSOME AND CONGRATULATION FOR YOUR BABY!
  29. this article got me a little bit teary-eyed! hahaha.. :D anyone can read the book that's a fact! they just gotta have the initiative to do so... :D
i'll always remember the first time I read the book, i was on vacation in another country, i spent my whole time there reading the book.. haha! TWILIGHTERS for life! :D

thanks for Twilight Tuesday Larry!!! im always looking forward to it! :)
  30. Larry, dude. You couldn't be ANY cooler than you are right now. Like seriously. Your so amazing. Your would baby would be damn proud! I know I am! So awesome! Hey if a mom could like Twilight, why not a dad? It makes sense. =] I'd love it if MY dad liked Twilight too. *laughs* I love reading your articles. They make my day!
  31. Your article is hilarious! I've added a link to it on my Suburban Vampire blog, and I'm proposing the term "Guylighters" for the phenomenon of male Twilighters.
  32. So, Larry, you're pretty much a god. Tuesday has been deemed my favorite day thanks to you. Oh, and by the way, you're so not MJ.

    Congrats on the baby. :D
  33. You did it, Larry! :) After reading this blog, my 46 year old husband picked up Twilight. He didn't tell me until he was on chapter 6. Last night, he read until chapter 15. Woot! Woot!:)
It has been a long time since we were MTV fans... the '80's and MTV videos... but I must say, we really do enjoy this website, your blog, and the coverage of the Twilight movie. You do ROCK, MAN! And MTV is keeping the WAIT time fun. Thanks MTV!
  34. This article totally just made my birthday, even though it was posted days ago.
    You are so my hero.
  35. haha nice article Larry
love you & love the new cover!
whenever Larry Carroll day becomes a national holiday give me a call, okay? lol
    CONGRATS ON THE BABY!
thanks for feeding my twilight obssession..
  36. Yay for Larry! ^^
  37. Haha, I also know a few guys who read the book...

And I once again have to thank u for Twilight Tuesday and all..

My Avatar over at my favourite Forum says: "I love Larry Carroll for bringing us Twilight Tuesday"..
  38. Larry, you are the bomb. We have some great male additions to the forum now, and you have not idea how much we appreciate having the "male" point of view on the Twilight saga.

Congrats on the baby, what about Rosalie, Alice, Esme, Bella, Victoria......
  39. Aww I love you Larry! There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a Twi-guy. And more and more guys seem to be coming out of the proverbial Twilighter closet. There were actually quite a few guys at the Eclipse release last year. It was exciting.
Don't worry, you don't look like Micheal Jackson in the YA section. Especially carrying Twilight. They understand ;)
Make sure you read The Host too! It's awesome!

    Looking forward to Tuesday =]
    You're the best, Larry.
  40. I've had friends that have tried to get me to read the books for some time and I finally got around to reading Twilight a few months ago. I was hooked. I had to read the next two immediately afterwards.
  41. Love the hairy arms in the photo :) I think it's great that a guy can read this book and enjoy it as much as so many of us have. I think if more guys read it that would understand the true meaning of love and romance. You are a brave man and we love you!
  42. First of all, congratulations on the baby =]
Second, you are definitely not the only one! My dad has read Twilight and loves it. My brother is almost done reading it. And I'm sure many people have already given you this link, but you should check out TwilightGuy.com. It's a great site about a guy reading Twilight; it's very funny and quite interactive.
And third: all the Twilighters more than appreciate you and all the work you've done presenting all of the Twilight information to us!
In fact, there is a Facebook group all for you! And I'm posting the link just in case anyone else on here would like to join it...

    http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=13710923213&ref=ts
  43. lol Welcome to the Twilight world :) Loved the article and hope you are as excited as the rest of us for the release of BD lol
Congrats on your new joy on the way :)
  44. Hey so I loved your article, its one of the funniest I have ever read, and some how I felt related, not on the male part but on the obsessed overage fan that I have become,
I found the book by chance looking for something in English to read, and like you I was hooked, You must now that I’m 27 year old woman, I live in Puebla, Mexico, yes I’m not making this up, believe me when my home town was mention on Eclipse I flip out, I have read the tree books which I order via internet and like must of us I can’t wait for the ford to brake the book stores, and of curse to see the movie, Like must girls I’m team Edward but believe me not all the time , I have a special care for Jacob as well.
O.k. So I’ll be looking for more of your articles because I think your point off view is one of the best over the cyberspace.
    Jocelyn
    Puebla, Mexico.
P.s. Sorry if I miss spelled something but English is not my first language.
  45. My husband did not turn on his xbox for days! he read all the books and loved them, he is trully looking forward to the movie (I caught him watching the trailer - after we had seen it several times- hahaha) I also know a couple of 30 year old guys that are reading Twilight and loving it.
I have seen a website for Twilight guys too! So you are not alone ;)
    Is a good book period.
  46. I just wanted to say thank you for this. I was just having a really hard time with something and couldnt get to sleep so I came on here to take my mind off of it and your "creepy old man in the YA section" comment did the trick! I even laughed out loud! so thank you!

Also I have been trying to get my brother to read the books but he says they are for girls and now I can prove him wrong!
  47. Hey Larry!
I'm a 14 year old Aussie chick who feel head-over-heels in love with these books. Almost every single girl in my year at school has read them, and only one didn't like it (but I think she just says she doesn't like it to be different). I also managed to get several guys my age into it as well! Don't think just because they're retarded and immature that they can't appreciate a good read (please note, one of the first guys that I convinced was 6 foot 2 and plays so much Basketball its not funny).

    Twilight rules!!!!!!

    Go Team Edward!!!!!!!!!
  48. omg you totally rock Larry. there arent many guys who are really into twilight, but your cool like that.
your kid is goona be so lucky to have you as a dad. haha.
  49. Larry, I feel exactly the same way you do. I couldn't say it any better. I'm 32, married with 4- and 2-yr old boys, and a female friend at work brought up the series every chance she had.

I finally figured 'what the hell', and picked up a copy of Twilight at B&N on a Thursday evening. By Saturday afternoon I was done and immediately bought New Moon and Eclipse. By Wednesday I had finished all three :)
  50. Thanks for your comments and your honesty. I teach 5th graders. My girls saw me reading Twilight and they became interested. I started loaning my book, went out and bought another copy to loan. Needless to say, my copies of all three books are getting lovingly worn. When I showed my class the trailer, my boys came on board!! I now have three that are knee deep in these books. Anything that teaches boys how to treat girls and girls what they should be looking for--is a plus. We are all talking about where we will be when the 4th book comes out. I am so sending this to a male friend of mine who has a birthday in June. Thanks for your openess.
