‘Twilight’ Poster Photographer To Continue Working On Franchise

Like Edward Cullen eyeballing a deer in the middle of the woods, you can be forgiven if you drool a bit while looking at the first official “Twilight” poster. It’s an MTV exclusive, it’s a thing of beauty, and it was photographed by 18-year-old wunderkind Joey Lawrence.

You can read our interview with Joey over on the MTV Movies page, but here’s an extra-juicy bit of news: Lawrence has signed on to shoot all the posters for “Twilight.” When I was on the set recently, virtually everyone I spoke with brought up plans for sequels, and if those dreams come true Joey would likely return as well. (Click the poster for the high-rez version!)

“Yeah,” he told us recently, swinging by our Santa Monica offices. “I’ll be doing all the next movies.”

Lawrence knew that the first poster had to focus on the key relationship of Edward and Bella, and said he’d like to keep the subsequent images focused on the characters and their couplings.

“I think they’ll probably be keeping the mood pretty dark and edgy still,” he said of his plan. “I’ve read the first script, and I know what happens in the next books just from talking to the actors, so the mood might change a little bit, but the style will stay the same.”

Lawrence also revealed that he’s been meeting with “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke, so that they can synchronize their overall plan.

“I think it’s going to be interesting with her,” insisted Lawrence, who hopes to become a director himself someday. “When I read the script, I realized this is not her kind of movie. Because she’s done like ‘Lords of Dogtown’ and ‘Thirteen,’ so when I read the script I was kind of like, ‘That’s a vampire movie,’ but then to find out that she was doing something with it, I think it’s going to be different than just a normal kind of teenage love story. I think it might be interesting to see.”

We’d expect nothing less, right Twilighters? I want to read the thoughts of each and every one of you (and believe me, we all do!), so here’s your TT question of the week: Is the poster, better, worse, or exactly as you imagined? What, if anything, would you have done differently than Joey?

  1. it's GORGEOUS! but i hope there are other posters for twilight besides this one.
  2. I'd always kind of thought of it as a little more dramatic...but this is very good! and edward looks amazing. wait...what am i saying? does he not always look amazing?
  3. Edward is exactly like I have always imagined him and Bella is perfect, too. I really like how Edward is over Bella since he is truely her mind and body guard. Really great poster!
  4. Joey is very perceptive in the fact that he sees these two the way (I think) most everyone else who has anything to do with this story sees them!!
What a talent!! Its absolutely gorgeous!!
  5. I love it! I agree that I think that they should have been looking at each other or both looking out, but it is still intriguing! Love it!
  6. I love the post. The color tone of the background reminds me of the books, and Edward definitely has an unearthly quality to him... which is perfect.
Kristen looks vulnerable and soft, which is how I imagined Bella to look like in the first book.
I also love that even though Bella's in the middle (central character), our main focus is on Edward because his unearthlyness just sucks our attention away (haha, no pun intended. ;D)
    Wonderful job!
  7. I have to be honest.. I think it's nice but I feel they look a little too animated and unatural. Yes, there is a cool dark side to it but the characters don't seem like their selves.
  8. Very happy! They way Edward is leaning over Bella, his natural protective position, and how it looks like he his carrying her like a child is exactly how I imagend them when Edward carrys her while running. I've seen photo shop pics on google image and hadn't seen anything promising but i'm am so excited to see this!!! I guess the only thing i would add is the iconic apple ... you know the forbidden fruit, just to give us die hard Twilighter readers a thrill :)

thanks for the awesome updates ... I don't know if i could survive without twilight tuesdays :):)
  9. Come on, how many Edward fangirls are hiperventlating at the sight of that poster? It's perfect, better than expected.
  10. I... oh my goodness, I can't even articulate. That is SO good. I would have done absolutely nothing different. It's perfect. Seriously.

    Hyperventilating...!
  11. I think the poster is better than I expected. I'm not a photographer, but I think it's really beautiful. The only constructive criticism I have is that, with the lighting, it almost looks like Bella and Edward weren't actually in the same room when the picture was taken. I know Rob and Kristen were cause I saw behind the scenes of the photo shoot, but they almost look like they were photoshopped together. There is distance there, and intimacy, which is very hard to pull off in one shot. I think the distance was intended, so great job Joey!
  12. i never would have thought of this poster, honestly, I thought of something pertaining to the book cover, (like rob or Kris holding an apple) but this is SOOOOOOOO awesome!!!!!! *drools* yay! And now, I hope that the poster will be released as a freebee in theatres, that would be awesome!
  13. I love the poster, and to think the one who edited this jaw-dropping picture is just an 18 years old guy, wow, he's amazing... two thumbs up for him! ^^,
  14. I love it!!
I mean, its not quite what I imagined, but its still realllyreally epicly amazing!!..Its pretty original, and I CANT WAIT until posters come out so I can buy them alll!!eeeeek!!!

    aieeeee!

  15. I love the poster. I think it perfectly portrays the whole feeling of Bella, looking confident, like she is exactly where she wants to be, and Edward looking very protective, yet troubled, and very much like he is indeed made of perfect marble. The vampire eye is the perfect focal point to me, and my congratulations to you, Joey, for a perfect artistic creation, and a great future with the series!! Larry, can we keep this going as they film 'New Moon'?!! The vampires can't age, so we have to begin filming soon! Please, Stepehnie, say "yes" and let Catherine get started!! Thanks to everyone!!!
  16. I really like it nice work!! We just need some posters/pictures that show their helpless love. So far a lot of stuff has covered the deep, confusing, intense aspects, but what about the desperate and beautiful love?!?!?! Great work though I really like it!
  17. omg this poster is just as i imagined. u couldn't ask for more!!!!
  18. Guys!
    the posteer is awesome

    what happend to bellaa!
focus on bella too! not only on edward!
    Comee on!

she's the hottie here! (Kristen Stewart
  19. Well- I have mixed feelings about this poster. Although it shows a lot about Edward's and Bella' relasonship. It looks pretty fake, i wish it would look a little more real. But Bella is perfect, she is beautiful, but not "Rosalie" beautiful. Edward has a good "flawless" look, and his eyes are perfect. Overall it's a good photograph and dang it for a eighteen year old it's awesome but It looks a little over-done
  20. I love it, just as I love the story.
You can see the love there, and the ultimate protection vibe.
plus the fact that Edward is gorgeous

although, for some reason I also think they seem a bit distant compared to the ammount of love expressed in the book.
I think if they had been holding hands in the picture, and not changing anything else, could have embraced that a little more

but other than that, it’s perfect and I see a story and love and emotion.
GOOD JOB! and thank you for doing good work.
  21. Edward's eyes look red...why are they red? He's a good guy remember. Hmm, maybe my computer is just retarded...
  22. I absolutely love the poster! I do regret that they aren't looking at each other, but Bella looks stunning and Edward is so perfect (Can I have a bite?) Joey Lawrence did an amazing job. Better than I expected, actually!
  23. Okay I have to admit it…I am a total geek…. When I saw the Name “Joey Lawrence” in your article I had a flash back to the show “Blossom” Ha-ha Not even the same. I think I just dated myself with that comment. LOVE the Poster. I was a slightly taken back at first with Edward’s posture, sort of hunched over. The mom in me wanted to say “Stand up straight, Robert!” hehe. Then after I heard Joey’s reasoning, that Edward is Bella's protector, I get it.

I love the quote being used frequently - "When you can live forever, what do you live for?"
I hope the two posters we have seen will be available to purchase in the future.

Another informative interview Mr MTV Larry and Yes, you are Ubber-Cool in my book

Look forward to Next Twilight Tuesday!!!
  24. I'm not so sure about it. It looks kinda awkward and uncomfortable. It almost looks like he was just photoshopped floating over her, kinda hunched over. I'm okay with the fact that he's not looking at her, but since he isn't, I'd expect him to be looking away, in a protective glare and he just looks dazed, like he's tired and we all know vampires don't get tired. I think Kristen looks great and very Bella-esque but there's something about Rob that looks, wrong and unnatural. At any rate, thank you so much for this Larry! :] [I'll probably buy it anyway to put in my room.. ;)]
  25. I really love it!!!!
It's not at all how i imagined it I thought that it would maybe include the apple (I love the whole apple thing=P)
The only thing that could be better is if maybe we got a little MORE of Roberts face to drool over =P

Luving all twilighters for life xx
  26. Its amazing. Its captured the true meaning of their relationshp, in one shot. The theme is perfect, and I love the contrast.
  27. I can't say I adored it, Edward looks like a lifeless marble statue staring at nothing.. kirsten on the other hand looks great, loved her expression.
  28. I like the poster, but rob doesn't look like rob. I don't know, but his mouth is different than on other of his pictures. i wasn't happy first to see that he plays edward. but with all the interviews and traylers i think he will be great. and i don't like his shirt. it looks to old for him...
bella is perfect on that picture. she looks now like i see her in my head when i read the book :-) and you can feel how she feels.
her hair is perfect and how she holds her hand on edwards breast (i don't know if it's what i mean), perfect!! in the picture is all their love and the distance to see.
  29. it looks amazing! i love the colouring, like the darkness and mystery of it all.
but... just because i love robert so much he should have been a little bit more into the poster

    fabulous other wise
    great job!
  30. W-o-w. That doesn't nearly cover it!!

It was amazing! I am very impressed that there was a trailer so soon. :) Well done and thank you so much for those who were in charge of that!

Car Crash and deer hunting scences look fantastic! And that smile of Robert Patison's just before he flung Kristen Steward over his shoulder made me swoon.

Well done for him and the acting skills, but personlay, i thought his voice was annoying, but then again that probably is personal taste and is not like that can be changed.

altogether amazing and bettert han what i expected!

    thank you so much!
  31. the eyes seem kinda too red... at first i thought he looked kinda satanish and i was like "oh wow... thats nice." but now i look closer i can see theyre brown.

but yea. pretty much perfect. :) theyve captured adward perfectly. rob's looming over kristen like he's protecting her, but also quite menacingly. you can see how powerful he is and how vunerable bella is.
  32. No matter what people say..
    I think it's PERFECT.

I always say that nothing's perfect, so i was expecting less.
    I was wrong.

    WELL DOME.
  33. WOW! THANK YOU SO MUCH FO POSTING THIS! Larry; u r my hero!

i live in australia so i get all the gossip a little late, plus i have to wait longer for the movie release but these twilight tuesdays are all that are keeping me going...o and the fantastic lexicon of course!

The poster was great! the only thing i found a little off was that rob/edward looked like he was bent (kinda like a banana) and he appeared as if he was going to loose balance and fall at any moment. basically he lookd a little akward, but beside thati loved it and it was everything i imagined it to be!

i can't wait to see another one!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK LARRY!! :D
  34. yes yes, this is exactly what I imagined!
but I think this is not a good picture of Bella. :(

    BUT
    it is still amazing!
    intimidating!
  35. yes yes, this is exactly what I imagined!
but I think this is not a good picture of Bella. :(

    BUT
    it is still amazing!
    intimidating!
  36. The lighting is really good, and he looks very protective, which is great. The problem is: where are all the other characters? I would have done the same lighting, with Bella at the front and Edward standing over her, but in the background I'd have had some Charlie and Alice and carlisle and James. Kind of like the cover of the first Lord of the Rings. But you have to be happy with what you get. It was never going to exactly meet my expectations, was it?
  37. I love it. There was so much emotion and story captured that I'm left speechless. There's just so much to look at in the poster. I was scared about how the poster would turn out but this is brilliant.

    10/10 5 star.
  38. I do actually like thie picture.
It's awesome how a young photographer took this great picture!

I love their expressions, even though it's not as quite as I had imagined.

Plus, I was expecting a BIT more intense mood. For example, staring at each other's eyes.

    but overall, it's GREAT
  39. Its awesome!
The poster is beautiful, its really really well done, you can read their emotions in this poster!
I'm happy and looking forward to a 'World Wide Premiere' now! =)
  40. I really like it but it's a little different than what I imagined. I feel it puts a little too much focus on Kristen Stewart and doesn't really give you a feel for the plot though the tone is just perfect. They both look great though so I know I'll warm up to it :)
  41. I think its great. He is always watching over her and the picture says that.I really love this poster and can't wait to see more....
  42. SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!
*that's all that comes out of my mouth when I look at this poster.
  43. Rock on Joey...

This kid has talent. I've been following him since he was about 15-16 when I first saw some of his photography on a website we both were on. He's got amazing talent.

He did a 5 minute video in back in 2005 that blew me away. Just NOT what you expected from a 15 yr old. I knew he was going to be successful. One day, I expect him to be filming with the likes Quentin Tarantino some day.

    "You go Joey!"

  44. One word:AWESOME!I love it!Kristen is beautiful, and Robert is really amazing! His eyes are so cool and dark! And is skin is so white! Now i wait for another poster with all the Cullens...
  45. It's better than I thought. I actually couldn't imagine a poster with people. Because I had no idea how Robert was going to look like with his contacts and pale skin... But I love it that Bella (kristen) looks really human and Edward (Robert) not. I was afraid they would make bella look like a model or something. But she looks natural! Love it. Good job!
I really hope the movie is also coming out in Holland. There are a lot of friends here! Please don't forget our (strange) little country...
  46. Just as i imagined it!! Edward so protective over Bella, Bella so calm. I love it!!!
  47. omg! the poster is perfect!!! but is edward really supposed to be that muchg taller? oh well i alomost fell out of my chair looking at it..... we all have a little bit of bella in all of us
  48. Quite incredible for any photographer, let alone one who's eighteen! The lighting is perfect and Joey definitely captured Rob so he looks completely Edwardy, dangerous yet crazy sexy.
Kristen looks perfect: sweet and yet not stunning, very well captured in this poster! Good!
  49. its purrfect! i hadnt actually imagined a poster - but this is definitely better than what i would have expected....love robert's eyes =D
kristen looks really beautiful too. honestly...waiting for december is agony.
  50. Its OWeSOme!!! wow! it captures their chemistry so well...GREAT JOB!
