‘Twilight’ Poster Photographer To Continue Working On Franchise

Like Edward Cullen eyeballing a deer in the middle of the woods, you can be forgiven if you drool a bit while looking at the first official “Twilight” poster. It’s an MTV exclusive, it’s a thing of beauty, and it was photographed by 18-year-old wunderkind Joey Lawrence.

You can read our interview with Joey over on the MTV Movies page, but here’s an extra-juicy bit of news: Lawrence has signed on to shoot all the posters for “Twilight.” When I was on the set recently, virtually everyone I spoke with brought up plans for sequels, and if those dreams come true Joey would likely return as well. (Click the poster for the high-rez version!)

“Yeah,” he told us recently, swinging by our Santa Monica offices. “I’ll be doing all the next movies.”

Lawrence knew that the first poster had to focus on the key relationship of Edward and Bella, and said he’d like to keep the subsequent images focused on the characters and their couplings.

“I think they’ll probably be keeping the mood pretty dark and edgy still,” he said of his plan. “I’ve read the first script, and I know what happens in the next books just from talking to the actors, so the mood might change a little bit, but the style will stay the same.”

Lawrence also revealed that he’s been meeting with “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke, so that they can synchronize their overall plan.

“I think it’s going to be interesting with her,” insisted Lawrence, who hopes to become a director himself someday. “When I read the script, I realized this is not her kind of movie. Because she’s done like ‘Lords of Dogtown’ and ‘Thirteen,’ so when I read the script I was kind of like, ‘That’s a vampire movie,’ but then to find out that she was doing something with it, I think it’s going to be different than just a normal kind of teenage love story. I think it might be interesting to see.”

We’d expect nothing less, right Twilighters? I want to read the thoughts of each and every one of you (and believe me, we all do!), so here’s your TT question of the week: Is the poster, better, worse, or exactly as you imagined? What, if anything, would you have done differently than Joey?

You can skip to the end and leave a response.

  1. Sarah Says:

    Larry,
I honestly believe that the poster is better than I personally ever imagined.
I believe that Joey Lawrence has done a spectacular job so bravo to him.
The intensity in just one picture is kinda of staggering to be honest!

I love the way that Edward is crouching over Bella such as the true protector that he is, though equally looking dangerous.

    I. Would. NOT. Want. To. Meet. That. Guy. In. A. Dark. Alley. :L

    Let me telll youuu!

I also love the way that Bella is portrayed more softly and human like. Not like a massively done up actress but as a person. Someone I can relate to.
There will be girls across the world going to see this movie that will be saying ‘ Hey, I kind of look like her.’

The edginess of the poster (it’s composition, the contrast, shadows etc…) are sure to grab people’s attention and I reckon the amount of male cinema goers won’t object as heavily to seeing this movie!

    Well done!

    Sarah, Ireland

  2. somethingblue Says:

As an adult fan of Twilight, and one who is in the advertising industry, I can’t help but love the tone and design of the poster. It is striking in its color and composition. As a fan of Twilight and Stephenie Meyer, I am thrilled! They ARE Edward and Bella and represent them so much better than I could have ever imagined.

  3. AnniGermany Says:

    Wow!
It’s not like I’d expected, but still amazing!
Rob looks handsome and scary at the same time and Kristen, well, Kristen looks like Bella, exactly as I imagined! It’s beautiful! Thank you!!!!!

  4. Janet Says:

I love everything about the poster except for Edward’s position over Bella. If he was standing next to her that would be different but the way he is looks a little awkward to me. I’m so excited about Joey wanting to keep it with the couples and I also think the mood is spot on. It’s great!

  5. Nina Says:

Okay, cue the screaming fan girl…..now….

    OMFGFFSAHHHHJESUSHOLYLORDBEAUTIFULAHHH

    Beautiful!
    GORGEOUS
    *GASP*
    ACK!

Thank you LARRY! Love You Lex!

  6. annie Says:

    They look freaking GORGEOUS!!!!!

    And sequals? YAY.

  7. Brandy Says:

I expected the cover from the book to be incorporated in some way but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I LOVE IT even more without it!

  8. tiffshakes Says:

eh I am not loving it…and it kills me to say anything like that about anything to do with twilight…I like the shades used in the movie trailer…the pale light, the cold blues…i think it would of worked much better for the poster…it looks too fake, too stylized…..we have to worry about this sort of thing so it dosen’t simply get written off as some childish attempt at solid lit. The shading messes with the whole thematic element of the story..don’t kill me fellow fans!!

  9. Jennygirl Says:

no other word comes to mind other then ‘perfect’.

  10. lauza Says:

I think Joey has done a great job of softening both Kristen and Rob’s features. They both have quite hard, commanding presences in real life, and yet he has made kristen look like the ‘innocent lamb’ that she’s supposed to be and made rob’s rather hard features look quite handsome, but menacing at the same time.

The different skin tones almost made me think they were edited together before i realised that nope, thats just good photography. and i also love rob’s eyes, theyre very effective, though i would have also loved to see some of those beautiful bronze locks.

    thats all. twi-hard out.

  11. beth Says:

I think Edward looks great! I’m not sure I like Edward towering over Bella…I mean he’s not that tall…is he?

  12. Lisa Says:

I think its great! Edward Looks exactly how Bella describes him…breath-takingly gorgeous and other wordly! Yea it looks darker than ur usual teen romance but i think thats great coz it really isnt your usual teen romance which makes it so god damn good!!!

  13. Sara Says:

Oh my god, the poster is absolutely gorgeous! I’m glad Edward doesn’t look scary like he did in the promo picture, but still edgy. I love your play on the shadows as well. It’sa very good contrast. I also love that you got the details of the story in there as well, such as Edward’s favorite color on Bella is blue. It physically strengthens their relationship in this poster. The chemistry is definitely there. I’m definitely dazzled by this picture; Edward’s eyes are absolutely smoldering, and that’s exactly what I was expecting (hoping) to see. Dazzling job, Joey, thank you. I’m looking forward to seeing how you will work with the sequels.

  14. Ariana Says:

Wow. His eyes are beautiful & he looks so amazing wow YAY!

  15. Tonip Says:

i thought it was going to be something else this tuesday, but this is great! the poster is so beautifully done. THANK YOU LARRY

  16. Isabel Says:

Well Larry, first of all let me thank you,
for letting all the Twilighters be so involved with the movie.
Now to tell you the truth, the poster is
perfectly amazing. It has a mystery in it.
like if a person approaches the poster,
and has NEVER read “Twilight” or heard of it
then they’ll most likely be curious and ask
questions like, “Why is the guy’s eyes yellow?”
or “Why is he so pale?” and so many other
questions. I believe the photographer did an
awesome job. This movie poster, will tease
the movie viewers, and bring in more people
to solve the mystery of the “yellow eyes”
or whatever. The poster is simple, but mysterious.
    I love it. lol
    Soooo… Congrats to the photographer!
I applaud him because he’s doing an excellent job.
and so is Catherine Hardwicke, Rob, and Kristen.
    The Cullen family ;]
Especially Rob. rawrr jaja im sorry but he is
too beautiful to resist. Just like the
    oh-so-sexy vampires ;]
    i love you larry
    and mtv
    and rob
    [especially rob ;D]

  17. Gilgunn Says:

Let me just say this HOLY FLYING CHOCOLATE COWS!!!!

I love this poster nothing as to what I was expecting its ten times better then how I imagened things would be going down for the poster. I love how you “popped” the eyes it makes it so Edward seems more then just human and it looks really hott on him = D

you can be sure of one thing as soon as I can I’m buying that poster and hanging it up on my wall YAY

Fantastic job and I can’t not wait to see more (unfortunatlly I have to)

    Love ~Gilgunn~

  18. Kiki Says:

I absolutely love it! Perfect job Joey! I love how their skin looks so soft & Edward’s eyes omg!!! I LOVE IT!

  19. Paola Says:

OMGSH!!! I love this poster, I copied and put it as a wallpaper on my labtop, (sorry I hope I didn’t do anything illegal)

  20. casey Says:

    WOWOWOWOWOW
This is just how i imagined it. From this picture the audience can see how truly protective Edward is of Bella and the love they have for each other. Joey is so so talented. THANK YOU LARRY!

  21. Ann Says:

Larry and Joey- you both have just made this the BEST WEEK EVER!!!!

I am soooooooooooooooo happy with the way the poster turned out and I love you both…

Just so you know there is a single tear running down my left cheek!!!

    Ann

  22. Victoria Says:

I Love this Poster! Nothing could be changed! They are absolutely gorgeous, I hope to see more of the couples, like Alice and Jasper and Emment and Rosalie. That would be cool! Is there anyway you could the other shots that they tired??? lol! Awesome! You guys are making it so hard to wait for December! lol! But don’t stop becuase I’m always visting the page to see anything new!

  23. Ida S.V. Says:

    OMG
This is just AWSOME! Just how I imagined it to be!
I’m jumping up and down in my seat now!
I think I’m getting a Twilight shock, too much new information on Twilight in so short time!
Now I just hope the movie doesn’t come to late to Norway. Then I’ll buy a ticket to the US in a second.
    Again. This poster. Vamptastic.

  24. Minh-Thu Says:

    OME!!! *starts hypervantilating*

This is AMAZING!!! I LOVE it!

Robert’s eyes are are so cool! He is so hot! *drool*
This poster is perfect! The mood is captured perfectly! And it’s great that Kristen is in the middle. Edward is the most loved character of almost every fangirl, but Bella is still the main character. I can’t wait for more posters!

    OME! IT’S PERFECT!!! ♥♥♥♥♥

  25. Anika Says:

    this is beautiful

  26. Sabucourt Says:

personally i think that this poster is not all that great. it looks tooo photoshopped and not realistic at all. also, more girls than guys will see this movie so there should be more edward than bella. it just makes sense. overal rating: 3

  27. Addicted Says:

Ya know, to be honest the picture is not what I had imagined. I was hoping that they might actually be looking at one another. I really DO NOT like the position that Edward is in. His upper back/neck looks all crooked(and not in that perfect crooked smile way). Sorry, maybe it will grow on me(sure hope so).

  28. Danii Says:

    this is just…AMAZING!!!
seriously, Robert is just..Edward, and he’s so perfect for it. I look at this at this and i dont see robert and kristen, i see edward and bella, and thats just amazing.
I am SO printing out a few of these, for my room, my locker..notebooks..etc ;]
    lol awesome TT, like always!!!!

  29. Taylor Says:

    I love this!
Bella looks perfect. Edward looks good too. I like the angle. If you tilt your head to the right, Edward looks better gorgeous :D.

  30. Paulina Says:

That is beautiful!!!! I loooove it =)

  31. Jenny Says:

The poster is amazing! The only change I would possibly think to make would be to include more of Edward! I think this poster projects a perfect image of Edward and Bella: Bella looking like a fragile human, and Edward protecting her from any evil. Edward looks “other worldly,” both of their personalities and the chemistry of Edward and Bella as well as the vibe from the overall story are well projected in this one photograph. Simply amazing! I didn’t think it was possible…but I can’t wait to see the movie even more now! lol.

  32. Cassie Says:

WTF, the poster is BAD. It looks like some cheesy book cover. They both look awkward. Please don’t tell me this will be the poster used when the movie comes out. I have seen better fan-made posters, and I’m not even kidding. I feel ANGRY. Way to ruin it, way to ruin it.

  33. Melinda Says:

    i love this poster!

  34. Anne Says:

Larry, I have to say, I LOVE YOU for everything that you have given us for Twilight thus far, but to be honest this poster disappoints.

This photographer is young and it obviously shows in his art. He manhandled the poster WAY too much with photoshop when a simple photograph of Rob and Kristen would have sufficed. If he would’ve used the original photograph of the two together, instead of manipulating the two images together, maybe it would’nt look like a 14 year old had their hand at photoshop and it’s just simple fan art.
Where was the art director for this poster? Did Summit choose somebody so young because they wouldn’t be as expensive for somebody with more experience?

Well that’s just my opinion. Again I love you Larry! You’re absolutely amazing and I LOVE Twilight Tuesday, but this is the first time I have ever been disappointed by Twilight news.

  35. Sana Says:

    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LARRY !
GET THOSE FUNNY PICTURES OF JASPER :D

  36. Cassandra Says:

It looks fake. And theater is spelled wrong.

I was kind of disappointed to find out that this was THE poster. idk. it’s just not what i was hoping for.

  37. shyjewel Says:

wow! this really looks great. anybody know if the poster is available or when it will be available??? his golden eyes! *sigh* he so looks like edward here!

  38. adriana Says:

    Very Cool!!!
I hope the next posters show more of Edward’s face :)
I want to see them looking at each other too.

  39. Liv-wa Says:

I love it! They both look so gorgeous. The contrast is a-m-a-z-i-n-g. I can’t wait for the movie!

  40. Laurel Says:

Larry–thanks for spoiling us, once again. The publicity you have going for this movie is amazing and certainly has me excited for December to arrive.
Although I am satisfied to have the poster, I am rather disappointed in the art. It appears to be too unnatural a pose. Someone had a bit too much fun on photoshop. I would have rather seen something that looked more realistic. I understand the mood that Joey was attempting to convey, but the pose just looks awkward to me. I hope the next posters for any future movies will be naturally, while conveying similar themes.

  41. Holly Says:

Drooling isn’t even the proper word for something like that.

    Talk about freakn breath taking.

Edward and Bella look absolutely perfect I can’t wait to see the movie. I’m already on the edge of my seat waiting for it and I’m going insane waiting too.

I’m so excited for the movie and the fourth book.

I maybe would have changed his head position just a bit. But other then that I love the poster.

  42. Brie Says:

WOW. i think its gorgeous, and yeah i definitely gasped a little bit when i saw it and just like all the other Twilighters, this will be on my bedroom wall somewhere.. i’ll find room!! lol

Great job to the photographer! he really captured Bella’s innocence and the protective-ness and love Edward feels for her =]

    Bravo!

  43. Valerie Says:

First thank you for all the Twilight updates, it’s really nice to see an outlet treat the fans so well. So again thank you!

Now onto the poster I really can’t believe all the positivity surrounding it. Everything about it is wrong, the lighting the angles, the over photoshopped look. What’s annoying is in the video it shows that an actual picture was taken involving both people but it’s obvious that the end result features two entirely separate photos. I won’t even harp on the fact that the photoshoot shown shows they are wearing very different clothing than the poster shows. The problem is and it’s no disrespect to Mr. Lawrence for creating it, it’s that it looks amateurish. It looks like something a beginner did for a fan art, not something that was professionally done as was the same look for the last promotional image revealed.

Summit Entertainment should really take a hand from Sony and save themselves so much money and promotion. Sony held a contest for both Resident Evil and Stay Alive where fans or people with just some skill were able to create posters and submit them through the official site. The end results where pretty amazing given the fact that very few submissions were by professionals. I believe in the case of Resident Evil some of the posters ended up on the DVD.

The thing is the fanbase already has it, if you peak around on many of the fansites for Twilight as well as some livejournal communities it’s extremely evident that the fans could have done better.

  44. Annette Says:

I absolutly love you can totaly see the conflict in Edward’s(Roberts) eyesof wanting to kill her but at the same time protect her and kisten looks awsome so beautifull and innocent!!!!!!love it!!

  45. Faith Says:

i havent really imagined wat the poster wuld look like, i wanted to be surprise and not b disappointed if it doesnt turn out the way i wanted it to.
but it is amazing! thxs Joey and Larry =) u always noe how to make us happy =P
they look so gorgeous!!! Rob is the perfect Edward

  46. Jennel Smith Says:

I’m not gonna lie, it’s beautiful.
Really, Edward/Rob looks so intense, whereas Bella looks kind of really innocent and helpless. Perfect. I mean, I LOVE it. He’s kind of all, “Be careful…” or, “This isn’t right, but I need you…”
and she’s all, “You can have me.”
    HEY YOU GUYS!!
    ***READ***
I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this song, but it’s
    Get Away - by Cartel

You should listen to it, it’s like as if it was written by edward cullen himself.

  47. Emily Says:

I was actually so surprised to see it up when I saw it this morning that I didn’t get to look at it that much… But looking at it now, I think it’s beautiful. Both of the actors are absolutely gorgeous. I like how his eyes are red, and the overall dark and edgy theme. It shows that, yes, this is a vampire film, but it’s also an awesome love story. Haha that’s how I look at it anyway.
I really hope this isn’t the only one we’ll get though. I’ll buy all of them, if they make more.

    Thanks!!! :D

  48. Faith Says:

they look so gorgeous!!! Rob is the perfect Edward

  49. Mel Says:

-waits to be slapped- lol. Hmm well this is really odd. I usually LOVE all Twilight related things. However, I’m not really feeling the poster. Don’t get me wrong I like it… just not really loving it =/

  50. krys Says:

i love this poster. i was so excited when i saw this today. maybe if we saw a little more of edward & his face just a little bit paler to make it even more vampire-ish & if they were a little closer together we can sense even more that they really want/need each other. amazing poster i love it (:
