‘Twilight’ Poster Photographer To Continue Working On Franchise

Like Edward Cullen eyeballing a deer in the middle of the woods, you can be forgiven if you drool a bit while looking at the first official “Twilight” poster. It’s an MTV exclusive, it’s a thing of beauty, and it was photographed by 18-year-old wunderkind Joey Lawrence.

You can read our interview with Joey over on the MTV Movies page, but here’s an extra-juicy bit of news: Lawrence has signed on to shoot all the posters for “Twilight.” When I was on the set recently, virtually everyone I spoke with brought up plans for sequels, and if those dreams come true Joey would likely return as well. (Click the poster for the high-rez version!)

“Yeah,” he told us recently, swinging by our Santa Monica offices. “I’ll be doing all the next movies.”

Lawrence knew that the first poster had to focus on the key relationship of Edward and Bella, and said he’d like to keep the subsequent images focused on the characters and their couplings.

“I think they’ll probably be keeping the mood pretty dark and edgy still,” he said of his plan. “I’ve read the first script, and I know what happens in the next books just from talking to the actors, so the mood might change a little bit, but the style will stay the same.”

Lawrence also revealed that he’s been meeting with “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke, so that they can synchronize their overall plan.

“I think it’s going to be interesting with her,” insisted Lawrence, who hopes to become a director himself someday. “When I read the script, I realized this is not her kind of movie. Because she’s done like ‘Lords of Dogtown’ and ‘Thirteen,’ so when I read the script I was kind of like, ‘That’s a vampire movie,’ but then to find out that she was doing something with it, I think it’s going to be different than just a normal kind of teenage love story. I think it might be interesting to see.”

We’d expect nothing less, right Twilighters? I want to read the thoughts of each and every one of you (and believe me, we all do!), so here’s your TT question of the week: Is the poster, better, worse, or exactly as you imagined? What, if anything, would you have done differently than Joey?

  1. Can not wait 'till the movie comes out! Why does it have to be 201 more days?! We can only hope that they do as good of a job as the book has. Bella is gorgeous, but I think that her hair could be darker and longer. Edward isn't exactly what I was looking for, god-like, but he is still hot! Edwards eyes should have been a butterscotch-gray if you ask me. Robert does a Perfect crooked smile! In the picture, Edward and Bella should be looking at each other, and Edward should be holding her to make it more to the point of the story, their relationship. My friends and I love the books, and hope to love the movie too! VAMPS RULE!

  3. It made me cry! and I NEVER cry (unless reading the books themselves). Even though I destested the actors and actresses at first, I got used to them. And as soon as I saw this poster, I nearly fainted. You can see the protective nature and love in Edwards eyes and posture, and also the extreme care he is also issuing with keeping Bella safe; even from himself.
And with Bella, you can see the love- and fragileness in her face. And even the way she's reached up to touch his chest is admirable. The lighting and angle of this shot shows every single emotion that the two people are trying to portray. It is truley a masterpiece, and I am so thrilled to see how the rest of the movies, and the posters turn out!♥
    -Bella
  4. honestly i don't like it much
like it doesn't look of high quality
it kinda looks like some fan photoshopped it
i mean robert's look is intense
but bella doesn't really look like she's part of it
the pic has to be taken of them actually together
it looks like u took a picture of kritsen and then robert and put it together
  5. This picture is truly amazing! Edwards eyes in the poster are the golden brown like in the books. Bella looks absolutely gorgeous. They are both stunning and eye capturing. Although this poster is wounderful I would have liked to have seen them both gazing into eachothers eyes. Just to show the true emotion they have for eachother.
Just seeing this picture makes me want to see the movie even more, which is hard to beleave.
  6. Oh My God . . . His eyes are gold!!!!!!!!! Awesome contact lens, I think! I like how mysterious they look, like they are hiding a secret. TWILIGHT MOVIE WILL ROCK!!!!!!!!!!
  7. i think its awful!
    edward looks rediculous
the poster doesnt represent what the books are about at all. where's the love, innocence, beauty and urgency in the characters???
  8. i can honestly say that this movie will be better than cynical fans believe it will be. i am guessing that the cast and the crew will be trying very hard to bring this drean and this fantastic book to life. and bring it to life in the bes way they can. we have to lay all our trust on these people and we need to trust that they will do a good job. they will im sure of that.
    hannah, age 14
a fan of twilight in the largest way possible
  9. I must submit my thoughts.....Edward = good.....Bella = not so good....
  10. absoloutely love it. edward/robert looks amazing. there could be more of him on it though :P
    kristen looks lovely aswel :)
great poster though, shows the dark-y-ness of it
  11. I adore it!! The only thing I would have liked different is maybe him nuzzling her neck ohh la la OME!!!
  12. ilove it, i love it,i love it , i cant wit to see it but i dont know who's cuter edward or jacod *cry*
  13. I definitly can't wait for the movie to come out, I'm a huge fan of the series, and I really love how well the cast seem to match with the thoughts I had about what the characters looked like, although I somehow imagined Edward as a little bit..shorter..but it's close enough for me to be absolutely thrilled about the movie!
  14. I think it's gorgeous, only Edward should look a bit more dangerous and Bella a bit more tensed.. Because now she's just standing there relaxed...
BTW, I love the books, just bought the host while I was for my holiday in America.. The first day it was there!!! Ilove it, but Bella, Edward & Jacob forever..
  15. omqqq. i can't waitt to see theis moviee.
i've been a fan since i was in 3 years agoo.
    reseving my ticketss.

  16. I hate it, I would have prefered the book cover as the movie cover aswell. but i guess its alright, also about "Edward". He looks nothing like my Edward, I never imagined him this, well, I just really dislike him i dunno why
  17. I really dislike this poster and the Edward they chose. I would have preferd the book cover as the movie cover and the mike newton to be Edward, but I'll live I think. I just wish the Edward was more atractive...
  18. Looks fantastic! Great job!
I like how you didn't try to fit all of the other characters in. Not that I'm naming names. *cough harry potter cough*
I can't wait until the movie comes out (I might have to steal it before). I've watched the trailer dozens of times --- so I say it again. Great job! Love it :)
  19. the twilight book is awsome i cant stand the waiting for the movie or teh next book is to long and the hole story is to awsome it the best books i ever read I LOVE IT. TO LONG AND TO AWSOME
  20. edward is awsome i love his personaltity
he is so protective the book was awsome and i bet the movie will be to EDWARDS #1 FAN also BELLAS #1 FAN i love the twilight series dont end them
    -cant stand waiting for more
  21. i think edward looks a little more demonic than i pictured him, but i cant wait for the movie and i think the posters really cool
  22. to be 100% honest i had never heard of the twilight books until about a week ago. I saw this movie poster and was captivated. the photography is...amzing. i am a photographer myself and the emotion behind the simplicity draws me in like a fly to a bug zapper. you can feel it before you completely see it. any photographer would know exactly what i'm trying to say. but in better terms; i had the picture on my desktop when my roomate walked by my room. not even in my room, she just passed. but the color and emotion grabbed her and she couldn't ignore it. she thought it was a photo i was studying for class before she got a good look at it haha. anyways, i have read all the books in record speed now. the photo is breath taking and i can't wait to see more.
  23. i absolutely love it!! but i've got to be honest that the hand doesnt quite look like Bella's hand, idk maybe it needs to be a little lighter but it really does look amazingthe compassion show in that single picture makes me want to jump into the movie!thank you i love it
  24. I LOVE IT! Joey captured the essence of these two characters perfectly. I can't wait for 12-12 to see the movie.
  25. I like it but I think Edward should be looking at the camera like Bella and that his eyes should be a golden colour. I think Kristen Stewart really captured Bella's innocence I can't wait for the movie!!!
  26. DUDE! im in love with the books! and the movie! YOU DONT EVEN KNOW!! lol ^_^
    i wish i could be bella >.
  27. i cant wait unitl the movie comes out by looking at the poster we all know the movie will be awesome i cant waiyt until breaking dawn come out i cant wait and bella character is so like bella in the book so as edward...hotty
  28. IT IS PERFECT THE WAY IT IS (BEATIFUL)
  29. The poster is growing on me. I really like how Edward is protecting Bella and it shows them in an intimate but not too intimate way, showing their innocence portrayed in the book. The only thing that bugs me is Edward's eyes. They are just a little too evil-looking here than I imagined. I also imagined Bella with darker brown hair, rather than red. That's what is portrayed in the books. Good, though.
  30. It Is good
  31. Omg!! I love this. It looks so cool!!
  32. its look soo............EDWARD! Kristen looks so innocent just like bella and Robert looks so protective and mesmerizing, just like my boyfriend, Mr. Edward Cullen.

but just a little thuing thats bothering me:they look like theyre not even in the same shot, like they're both totally zoned out. they should be more into eachother. I personally think that edward shouldve been doing his crooked smile. Its just so sexy. I love him So mUch! hopefullyu the movie will match up with the books, and better be either as good or a little better. AUG 2:BREAKING DAWN @ ALL BARNES AND NOBLES -MIDNIGHT.
  33. its look soo............EDWARD! Kristen looks so innocent just like bella and Robert looks so protective and mesmerizing, just like my boyfriend, Mr. Edward Cullen.

  34. amazing books!!! I love this love story is the best I ever read!!!
  35. amazing. i love it :D
wow. for 18 years old this is absolutely fantastic. can't wait for the movie!!!!!!
  36. I love this picture you could tell how much they love each other. kudos Joey. I was just wondering where can I get this pic. it's awsome and I want it.
  37. It's a pretty good poster and it makes me even more excited than I already was. But I think that Bella looks a little bit like a child and could have a more grown up photo taken. Other than that it's great though. I'm really psyched for this movie. I cannot wait!
  38. I love the book! Don't like Robert acting as Edward. Ed was supposed to be god-like. Rob isn't really that fantastic. But I do like Kristen as Bella. It was as I imagined.
  39. I am not a professional photographer, so please take my comments with a grain of salt and acceptance of bias ;-). In this picture, the portrayal of Edward really strikes a chord with me, managing somehow to look dangerous and gentle at once. However, I find Bella's stance a little... bland. I like the juxtaposition of shadow on Kristen's face- however, there seems to be something...lacking. The way I envision them in a snapshot is Kristen in the lower right foreground,(portrait shot- waist up) half in shadow and looking afraid, or at least apprehensive, and her face turned to the left as if just about to look over her shoulder. Edward is behind her to the left,(long shot- full view) giving her the look that he is currently wearing in this poster- intense, dagerous and... immortal. He is standing on the cusp of the clearing that Bella inhabits, as if he is gathering the courage to come out of the darkness of the forest behind him. The sky is a deep blue fading to pale blue on the horizon, with the moon just becoming visible over the silhouetted tips of the trees.
I simply (well, maybe not so simply) think it ought to give more of a feeling about the book than just the romance- for me, the romance is the catalyst, but not the body. As I have said, this is just my opinion. Acquiesce or sneer as you please.
  40. Just one thing I forgot to mention- great job with Edward's eyes! They seem to leap out at me, and I almost feel as if he's about to look up at me... If I were to alter one thing about this shot, though, Kristen should be looking up at him. Intensely, and a little afraid, as I said above. Not so dreamy/vacant-looking.
  41. I honestly love the poster..it's amaizing.
I specially love the way Edward's eyes are gold, which means he's not thirsty, LOL. I'm really excitd about the movie and I can't wait for the release of Breaking Dawn. I also hope they would film the other three books. :D it'd b great if they did.
  42. An 18 year old did that?!? May I just say that I have not been able to stop looking at that photo. It captures the very essence of the movie! I just have one thing to say to this Joey Lawrence.... dazzling! :)
  43. This is a wonderful piture portraying edward as protective of bella, but i think you should show edward as a little more ... aproachble I guess is how you would describe it
  44. I love this.
    seriously right now,
    Jooey Lawrence is a genius.
I want this poster on my wall...so bad.
  45. oh my god i love it! this poster is amazing. im like in awe. i cant wait til this movie comes out ONLY 64 DAYS TILL BREAKING DAWN!
  46. I think this picture is perfect, and is exactly as I envisioned them. Yes, I love the shadowing you did here. I love the way Bella's face has the shadow down the middle, one side dark and the other light. To me, this signifies her two sides, the dark side that she so loves and is a big part of her life, and the real world which she has to be a part of, thus signifying, mortality and immortality. Great job, and Edward definitely looks luminary and timeless.
  47. I can't decide if I like it or not.
I think I do, but I'm still not sure.

I love Kristen as Bella, it really works.

But Robert still hasn't convinced me entirely that he's perfect for Edward. And to me, for this movie, the actor has to be perfect. I will be let down if he doesn't pull through. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. Robert, you have some convincing to do, so act well.

I love the poster, except that Edward's eyes are red.
His eyes are always described as either dark or golden; not red. So that's really the only thing I find wrong with it.

I love that he's being protective of her. That's really all that he does throughout the series.
I love how fragile she looks. That's esactly how Edward and really anyone (once they see her in gym) sees her.

    I love this poster.
    It works.
  48. I never thought about a poster. But when I saw the one Lawrence captured I realized I had finally saw the true love shared by those two. I loved the background. It relays the dark side but the foreground shows the intense desire they have for each other. Cudos to Joey. It is fantabulous!
Looking to see more like these in the future.
  49. Thi is not what I imagined...its way better!!!! I love the poster, Robert is so....so....Edward!! (cant find any words to describe him)
  50. OMG!!! I cant wait til this movie comes out. And for the 4th book to come out. Although Edward sounds more cute in the book then in this movie. So yeah.
