‘Twilight’ Poster Photographer To Continue Working On Franchise

Like Edward Cullen eyeballing a deer in the middle of the woods, you can be forgiven if you drool a bit while looking at the first official “Twilight” poster. It’s an MTV exclusive, it’s a thing of beauty, and it was photographed by 18-year-old wunderkind Joey Lawrence.

You can read our interview with Joey over on the MTV Movies page, but here’s an extra-juicy bit of news: Lawrence has signed on to shoot all the posters for “Twilight.” When I was on the set recently, virtually everyone I spoke with brought up plans for sequels, and if those dreams come true Joey would likely return as well. (Click the poster for the high-rez version!)

“Yeah,” he told us recently, swinging by our Santa Monica offices. “I’ll be doing all the next movies.”

Lawrence knew that the first poster had to focus on the key relationship of Edward and Bella, and said he’d like to keep the subsequent images focused on the characters and their couplings.

“I think they’ll probably be keeping the mood pretty dark and edgy still,” he said of his plan. “I’ve read the first script, and I know what happens in the next books just from talking to the actors, so the mood might change a little bit, but the style will stay the same.”

Lawrence also revealed that he’s been meeting with “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke, so that they can synchronize their overall plan.

“I think it’s going to be interesting with her,” insisted Lawrence, who hopes to become a director himself someday. “When I read the script, I realized this is not her kind of movie. Because she’s done like ‘Lords of Dogtown’ and ‘Thirteen,’ so when I read the script I was kind of like, ‘That’s a vampire movie,’ but then to find out that she was doing something with it, I think it’s going to be different than just a normal kind of teenage love story. I think it might be interesting to see.”

We’d expect nothing less, right Twilighters? I want to read the thoughts of each and every one of you (and believe me, we all do!), so here’s your TT question of the week: Is the poster, better, worse, or exactly as you imagined? What, if anything, would you have done differently than Joey?

You can skip to the end and leave a response.

  1. Laura Says:

When I first saw it, it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting just because of the countless fan manips. Now that I see what the photographer was going for, I really like it and it’ll be cool to see what he does on the rest of the movies, because the dynamics definitely change!

  2. Robynnn Says:

OMG!!!! I absolutely ADORE it! Seriously, this is what I’ve always imagined, or even more so. Rob can absolutley, without a doubt, melt you in your seat. There’s going to be high reports of fainting, light-headedness and squeelings coming from the theatres whenever anything Edward/Rob-like comes on. And Kristen looks amazing!

I like how rob looks really protective, but at the same time, he still has that dark look that shows danger. It makes you almost shiver when imagining him on screen. His eyes are just like i imagined too!

Then also, Kristen is just plain Bella. She looks gorgeous and so sofft and delicate and in love. Like she should. :P I love her!

GOOD JOB YOU GUYS!!!! Luv it! Thank you for being so true to the story and cant wait to see more!

  3. Becky Says:

I love it!! Can we order the posters yet?

  4. Jonelle Says:

The general concept is pretty on point. I liked their positioning and the lighting effects (especially with his eyes), as I usually imagined the theme to be a little more darker, and this poster reflects that, as well as their relationship.
I guess I hoped that they’d be looking into each other’s eyes, but this works!

  5. Sara Marie Says:

    Beautiful!

  6. IndigoMisfit Says:

    Thank you!!!!!I really love it.

  7. Fatimeh Says:

    thank you so much larry!
    its beautiful.

  8. rebecca Says:

I LOVE IT … i love how it looks like rob is protecting kristen .. thanks larry, joey and mtv

  9. Sarah Says:

WOW. Larry, it’s AWESOME! What would Twilighters do with out you on Tuesdays? Just to recap here, the poster is awesome, and you are awesome.

  10. mary Says:

AMAZING!! This takes my breath away. I’m telling you this is going to be the longest 7 months and 5 days of my life!!!

  11. Yvette Says:

Well I just finish my first half of my AP test and rushed over to the computer lab to see this awesome poster!!!.. So where can I buy it?? lol..
Thanks Mtv and thanks to the guy who did it. Love how Kristen look so innocent and Roberts eyes

  12. Rebecca Says:

Blehh, don’t like it. It looks like some kid with photoshop just threw it together or something. Iunno, not how I would have imagined it at all butttt you can’t please everyone all the time. Thanks for posting, Larry :]

  13. marielle Says:

umm i dunno..I think that kristen and Rib as the characters are pretty good but there i jsuto too much photoshop..they are nowhere close to each other to see the real chemistr and hey are not even looking at each other.. bella looks kinda scared.. sorry guys but i just dont see the LOVE! but i love them for real and the teaser trailer was fantastic!

  14. Lynn Says:

you NEVER disappoint! you are my FAVORITE person.. everrrr!

  15. Cami Says:

Wow…this poster gave me goosebumps! I love it!

  16. Chloe Says:

I guess I’m the odd man out here, as I am not that crazy about this poster at all. Robert (Edward) looks fine, but Kristen looks like she is 12 years old here…and I was really hoping to see Stephenies cover shot (the hands/apple) on it somewhere and the Moonlight and trees. I must admit, I have seen many other psuedo posters on fan sites that turned out MUCH better than this one. Yes I can see how he might want to center around the two main characters but there is not much depth at all to this. I hope they improve and do the books and story a bit more Justice.

  17. Brittney Justice Says:

The poster is just how I imagined it should be. Rob is exactly everything I thought Edward should be. He’s so protect and Kristen really looks like she needs him. This is absolute greatness.

  18. CYNTHIA Says:

LOVE THE POSTER!! LOOKS AMAZING!! THANK YOU LARRY FOR ALL THE NEWS YOU’VE GIVEN US.. YOU’RE AWESOME!!-from a twilightmom..

  19. Daniela Says:

BETTER! I love it and I’m very happy with it! Kristen/Bella looks just right and very beautiful and Rob/Edward just looks dazzlinly hot and amazing (oh those eyes!). Though it looks kinda like they wouldn’t be standing next to each other ’cause I guess they were really (?).. but I’m okay with it. But it’s better than I thought it would be (like everything with the movie).. I was excpecting the typical movie cover poses with the standing beside or against each other, but this is so much better! Thank you MTV for being awesome! You rock!!

  20. Amy Says:

Oh my God. I want to make love to this poster, it’s so sexy :P.

  21. Stacy from Oklahoma Says:

OMG!!!! Soooo much better than I pictured! Robert is the hotness in this pic! *faints*

  22. Leonela Says:

I really love this poster. I love how Bella’s hand is taking Edward because it symbolizes that she isn’t afraid of him but he has concerns all over her face. Edwards face shows the constant internal struggle he faces for loving her.

  23. Ashley Says:

    The poster is AMAZING!

    SO perfect!
I like how darkish it looks without be totally horror-ish looking! It’s amazing! Yay for sequels!

    I LOVE YOU, LARRY!

  24. Mia Says:

I’m shocked that I’m about to say this…but I don’t really like it. Edward is positioned at a very weird angle, and honestly some of the fanmade movie posters I’ve seen recently blow this poster out of the water! I hope this isn’t THE official one and only poster, PLEASE come out with something else!
Thanks for all you do MTV!

  25. crisss Says:

dear joey..or mtv i dont want to be mean but i dont like it
it would be better if they were looking at each other and bella’s hand is much lighter or diferent than her face..
and the angle of edward.. its weird
i cant tell if they are hugging or what?
it looks like one of those semi-okay fan made posters…
    no ofend!

  26. Diana Says:

Honestly, I love it. I never really imagined a poster, cause, come on, most of us Twilighter’s are so busy looking at photos from the set and videos and re-watching the trailer for the hundredth time… *cough* Of course I haven’t counted.
But I love the poster and I never buy movie posters, but you can be sure that this one is going smack dab on my wall. *puts up tacks to mark the place* See? I’ll be ready. :]
Though I may have to buy two to keep my mother from stealing mine. 0_o

  27. Melissa Says:

He definitely should read the books.. he says he knows what happens from talking to the actors, but I really want him to REALLY KNOW the stories…

Not that it seems to have hurt him here. He did an AWESOME job with this poster. It’s bloody amazing

  28. KaseyHeartEdward Says:

I honestly never truly thought about what the poster would look like lol. But i really like it. I love how Edward’s amber eyes blaze. And how Bella is so close and will never let go. I love it i feel Joey Lawrence did a very good job! Thank you Larry for this. The Twilight Lexicon Sent me here!
    love ya
    ~Kasey

  29. Hermione Says:

This is fine, except for one problem…it looks like the poster for a vampire movie! We get the impression of Edward being sinister and Bella being frightened. This will give people the wrong impression about the movie, and about Twilight in general.

  30. sana Says:

    I LOVE TWILIGHT TUESDAYS!

  31. Nina Lisa Says:

I think this poster is beautiful. I’ve seen so many fan made posters, so I’m not really sure what I was imagining. But this one is beautiful.

  32. Ahidee Says:

When I would picture the poster in my Twilight filled head of mine, i used to picture I guess more of a collage that would look like it belonged on the cover of one of the books. Or something like made for scary movies where they don’t quiet give away the person(s) and just do like a scenery… Edward is perfection in every angle and we know that even though Bella is an average girl she is still beautiful non the less BBBUUUTTTTT there is only so much of that perfection that you could protray in a poster before it starts to look to cheesy and fake. (like someone before me made the comment about Bella looking plastic and fake)
Please don’t get me wrong. I admire the work that this young man did (because i know i could never pull off a thing like that) BUT (again, sorry) it DOES look a bit on the amature side.

  33. Jo Black Says:

Well the trailer looks great, what else could we expect? So he is working for the sequels posters. Does that mean confirmed sequels?

  34. hibella Says:

I don’t like it. I’ve seen better made fan posters. The fact that this guy is only eighteen scares me. Also, the angle that Edward is in bugs me. When I first saw it I couldn’t stop craning my head to the left and right. It’s just an awkward angle for him. His skin and eyes to me look overly photoshopped. Using editing programs like photoshop to give the photo a certain effect is fine but it’s not supposed to be so obvious. There is a way to do it without it looking fake. I’m in love with the series and the cast of this movie so I just want everything to turn out perfectly. I just hope Joey learns more about the story(because from the way he talked about it it’s obvious he doesn’t know much) for future projects.

  35. Cynthia Says:

The poster is beyond anything I imagined! It beautifully portrays Edward’s and Bella’s need for one another. I like that Edward’s hovering over Bella, it also shows him as a protector.

    FANTASTIC JOB!!

  36. Jen Says:

Wow. I like it! Kinda wish they were looking at each other, but it seems like maybe Edward is protecting Bella from something already.. :)

  37. Sherrie Says:

I was very impressed with Joey Lawrence and his artistic ability as well as his knowledge of who his is and what he wants to do with his future. I thought the poster was briliant, and it sort of made me think of “The Phantom of the Opera” movie poster. The “Phantom” poster was always my favorite poster until now. The “Phantom” poster’s style was similiar in that it had a black background with a close up of the Phantom and Christine close up. The difference was that you could “feel” the sexual tension, and obsession and the danger(his hand around her throat)in Phantom. With “Twilight” it has the “feel” of Bella and Edward truly loving each other (her head appearing to rest on his chest whilst looking to us to remind us of her vulnerablity and strength and of Edward being dangerous and yet using his body as a protective blanket around the woman his has waited 108 years to be with( with his head averted alittle as if to say “I know I’m not good enough for her but I can’t live without her). It’s beautiful. I love it.

  38. diana Says:

    that poster is genious
    i like both acters

    sorry
    i don’t like Bella’s red [pinkish] lips.

    but it’s genious.

  39. Twifanatic Amanda Says:

This poster is so pretty and I would love it to be on my wall. Anyway that would be posible, Larry? :D

  40. Kate Says:

The poster is stunning! It is even more than I imagined it would be, and Robert’s eyes! *THUD* They are perfect, and Kristen is perfect…the poster is perfect. ;)

  41. Sherrie Says:

Thanks Larry.

  42. Shelby Says:

Oh my gosh! This is amazing! I love how you can just see the golden color of his eyes enough to get the idea! It’s really great! If there’s someone who sees this poster not knowing what it is, they will most definitely be curious and want to see it!!!

  43. Clarissa Says:

I must say that I do like the contrast in skin tone between Edward and Bella. After watching the trailer Edward didn’t look too pale many times, he looked like he could blend in without much difficulty, which is what they try to do, but we all know that that they are really pale. After reading the analyses of everyone else who has commented I understand the pose they have. I like the colors and the dark-broodiness of it. Overall, I think it looks great (but then again I think that of anything twilight-related.

  44. BellaMarius Says:

Love the poster, I think it captures the essence of Bella and Edward perfectly.

    They did a great job.

  45. Angelia Says:

I love it! and it makes me want to see the movie even more…but I would like to see the whole cast in a poster as well …any way i can order the movie poster?

  46. Stephanie V. Says:

I love it. It’s absolutely gorgeous!
It really captures Stewart and Pattinson as Edward and Bella. You look at it and the characters come to life.
I agree with some of the other Twilighters on here, I would have had them more focused on each other. But it is breathtaking.

  47. Sabine Says:

    It is simply awesome. Really.
I love the way how Robert looks. He IS Edward. Totally.
And this movie poster is SO MUCH LOVE.
    I want it. :D haha.
And Kristen really looks amazing. :D

    aw.
    thanks Larry!

  48. Annie Says:

I LOVE it! It is what I really was looking for. I can’t wait to buy it.

  49. -flikk- Says:

    its beautiful!

    bella looks amazing
and edward is exy as ever haha
tho i did always picture him with more hair

    O.o

  50. Christen Says:

I like it, and Im really glad for something new, but to me, the poster looks a little Photoshopped. Like they just slapped Rob’s face and some text over a picture of Kristen. I really do love the way its set up, but I just hope that they put more effort into making it look real in the future.
