‘Twilight’ Poster Photographer To Continue Working On Franchise

Like Edward Cullen eyeballing a deer in the middle of the woods, you can be forgiven if you drool a bit while looking at the first official “Twilight” poster. It’s an MTV exclusive, it’s a thing of beauty, and it was photographed by 18-year-old wunderkind Joey Lawrence.

You can read our interview with Joey over on the MTV Movies page, but here’s an extra-juicy bit of news: Lawrence has signed on to shoot all the posters for “Twilight.” When I was on the set recently, virtually everyone I spoke with brought up plans for sequels, and if those dreams come true Joey would likely return as well. (Click the poster for the high-rez version!)

“Yeah,” he told us recently, swinging by our Santa Monica offices. “I’ll be doing all the next movies.”

Lawrence knew that the first poster had to focus on the key relationship of Edward and Bella, and said he’d like to keep the subsequent images focused on the characters and their couplings.

“I think they’ll probably be keeping the mood pretty dark and edgy still,” he said of his plan. “I’ve read the first script, and I know what happens in the next books just from talking to the actors, so the mood might change a little bit, but the style will stay the same.”

Lawrence also revealed that he’s been meeting with “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke, so that they can synchronize their overall plan.

“I think it’s going to be interesting with her,” insisted Lawrence, who hopes to become a director himself someday. “When I read the script, I realized this is not her kind of movie. Because she’s done like ‘Lords of Dogtown’ and ‘Thirteen,’ so when I read the script I was kind of like, ‘That’s a vampire movie,’ but then to find out that she was doing something with it, I think it’s going to be different than just a normal kind of teenage love story. I think it might be interesting to see.”

We’d expect nothing less, right Twilighters? I want to read the thoughts of each and every one of you (and believe me, we all do!), so here’s your TT question of the week: Is the poster, better, worse, or exactly as you imagined? What, if anything, would you have done differently than Joey?

You can skip to the end and leave a response.

This is absolutely as I imagined.
    Really, it’s perfect.
    Rob really looks like Edward.
    So..protective.

    W O W.
(sorry about my english, I’m german, but I wanted to say something about this amazing poster)

  2. deb. p Says:

    the poster looks amazing!!!
thanks Larry and Joey for the amazing picture!!
omg those eyes are…i swear he oozes hottness from every single pore!

  3. cathrine_cullen Says:

I can’t really say I’ve ever imagined a poster. I like it. I like how Bella’s face is half in shadow and I think the mood is fitting, but I would have liked to see more of Edward’s face and maybe have had them looking at each other and if not looking at each other have Edward looking out more with one of his intense stares. I know Bella is the main character, but we all know what the fangirls want to see. But this way I think more people (other than fangirls) will be drawn in.

  4. lutten16 Says:

It’s awesome! It captured their chemistry and their obsession for each other in one shot. You can see her holding him as if clinging to his very being and his burning eyes thinking of her. And the doubt he has about loving and wanting her. Doubting his strength and willpower in her presence.
It just shows that undieing forbidden love that they have for each other.
It’s just a fact that if someone tells you can’t have something you are going to want that thing 100 times more. And this poster shows that. Great work!
Also love the phrase in the corner. It tells you about how much they want/need each other. The fact that they just can’t live without each other. That their exsistance depends on each other…..
    Love it :D

  5. Adina Says:

I like the angle of the photograph. I also like that it focuses mostly on Bella and her looking as she needs Edward. I think that is a key point in the books. From what I have seen, I really like what Hardwicke is doing with it. All the visuals look really good. Thanks for the poster!

  6. Bianca M Says:

To be honest, Bella’s face looks a little… plastic in this photo (especially compared to her hand). A bit too much air brushing maybe.

Edward’s facial expression is great… very intense. Maybe I would’ve liked to see a bit more of him.

Other than that, love it! Although, to be fair, I’m a little biased …I’d love anything to do with twilight.

    XOXO

  7. sadie Says:

bella looks great- super human, especially her skin and hair. i like the contrast with edward’s skin. the only thing, though, is that the angle of edward’s face isn’t very attractive- no upper lip, super pointy nose. i feel like there are more attractive angles to rob’s face.

  8. Jenny Says:

It is BRILLIANT! i love how innocent and fragile she looks while edwards eyes are glowing amber! you can see the passion between them… omg this is absolutely amazing! joey did a FANTASTIC job!
thanks MTV for Twilight Tuesdays! The highlight of my week!!! =)

Nice work. Love the glow on Bella’s skin. :]

  10. KaroGermany Says:

Because the comment didn’t get posted I write it again, haha.

    The poster looks soooo perfect!
It’s exactly like I imagined it, really.
    Rob just looks like Edward.
    So..protective.
You all are doing this so amazing.
(I’m sorry about my english, I’m german, but I wanted to say something about this perfect poster hehe.)

I aslo like the phrase in the corner. It sort of gives you the impression about what the movie and what the relationship between them is. the fact that their exsistance depends on each other….
    Love it! :D

  12. Lizzylu Says:

I am very impressed at the talent whether he’s 18 or older!. As a huge fan of the series I have to admit he did well in capturing Edward & Bella’s personalities in a shot. Because I know the story so well I cannot gauge what a 1st impression would be to someone who has never read Twilight. Will be interesting to find out! Many, many thanks to MTV for keeping we the obsessed updated with as many details. It is great to have the opportunity to watch it all come together!

  13. iammyownhappiness Says:

The poster looks cool but I’m not sure if I really, really like it. It looks kind of like a fanmade poster… from someone with great photoshop skills. Nonetheless, still very exciting to see… being related to Twilight and all. :]

  14. Annika Says:

I like this one… But in my opinion, it is too soft…Additionally I think they should look at each other..

But well done, can’t wait to see the next ones :)

  15. Van Says:

    I love it!

  16. Natalie Says:

    omg love it

  17. Isobella_Magpie Says:

The Poster is awesome. Bella looks delicate in comparison to Edward. Edward doesn’t look human which is entirely true. A bright Happy Poster would not be true to the movie so this one is awesome. I want to know where I can buy one for my room! And I want to see the Jackson one! Jasper’s going over my bed! Although i think I’ll need an Edward one too!

  18. Dazzling Says:

I’m not entirely satisfied with it. The colours are a bit out of shape with the contrast and then it looks too artificial - too photoshop-ish, especially with how her hand is on his chest yet there is that slight gap between them and although I am sure it has some sort of conceptual meaning, it looks too much as if it’s been pasted to fit :(

I wish it had more natural elements because even though the Cullens are vampires, they still live in our world, trying to be as humane as possible and so it would have been good with a nice background of for example a mystical forest. However, since this is a close up, I don’t mind too much but I can otherwise just imagien them lying instead on the meadow, with Edwards pale skin and intensive eyes and then Bella in his arms. It wouldn’t even have to be sunny due to the sparkling skin :)

  19. Char Says:

the poster looks amazing! Joey did an excellent job capturing their chemistry. its better than i ever imagined!!
if anything different could have been done: Edward should also have been lookin out at us.

  20. kristen Says:

    PERFECT.

  21. laurarob Says:

    That is beautiful. Thanks, Larry!

  22. Meg Says:

Well…It’s better than that talentlessly photoshopped promo pic that just came out. Although I wouldn’t say it concentrates on their relationship…It looks like they’re both in their own realms.

  23. Teygan Says:

    Where do I get one?!?!?!?

  24. kristen Says:

    My friend thinks i’m a nerd…butttttttttttttt.

    ask me if i give a ****.

    i love it.

    ha daniel! :P

  25. Ash Says:

Amazing for someone his age to be given this opportunity. I always imagined they would be darker (more black) and way more conceptual like the book covers. For a Twilight movie teaser poster, I would have loved just to see two holding hands (one pale, one human), sort of similar to the book cover.

  26. Olivia Says:

This is more than I could have ever imagined for a movie poster. I’m seriously dabbing tears away from my eyes, it’s so perfect! This book series made into movie is the best thing to ever have approached my small, insignificant life, and I want everybody to know exactly the effect this movie poster has had on me. Thank you so much, and keep up the amazing work!

  27. Bex Says:

LOVE this!!! its so dramatic! it conveys the emotions of Bella and Edward well definetly excited to see the future ones for the next movies!

  28. Hannah Says:

    Thanks for posting this.

And my answer to your question..

i think the poster is ok but i believe it could have been done better. I don’t like how unnatural it looks because it has been touched up so much. I believe the pose could have been better as well. I don’t like the way Bella is holding her hand up against Edwards chest. It makes me feel like she is pushing him away rather than wanting him to be closer (which is ofcourse what Bella wants). I don’t know. It’s hard.

  29. VampireGirl Says:

I love the poster. I do. As far as the picture itself (because if you look in the lower lefthand corner, you can tell it’s actually a picture) I wouldn’t have done anything different.
But the lighting and filters over it kind of give it a fan-made photoshop look.
By someone with kickass photoshop skills obviously, but still.

I’m more excited that the rest of the movies are to follow. haha

  30. Heather Stevenson Says:

The poster is sooooo much better than I could ever have hoped, he looks soo soo soo fierce and his eyes are just wow and Bella is sooo pretty

  31. Sagara Says:

Larry that poster is great. Thanks for the update. My source for your blog is the twilightlexicon.com I am from Slovakia so you should know there are twilighters all over the world ;)

  32. Nann Says:

I think Joey did a great job but I would love to hear that he read the books. I was also hoping for a forest scene as the location they filmed was so beautiful and erie. I think it would have caught my eye more but good job to Joey. I’m looking forward to the new moon poster if they make it, with a wolf feeling!

  33. onesavedall Says:

WOAH! Good for him! Thanks for the update Lary! Personally, I don’t think anything should be changed. It give those who don’t know the story a “Oooohhh… wonder what this movie’s about” kind of feel/thinking process… and those of us who are lucky and DO know… well it just sends butterflies to my stomach and shivers up my spine… let’s just say that.

  34. Jules Says:

I wouldn’t have made edward’s eyes so bright, but i understand why he did it. I just think that personally it would’ve been more “edward” if he’d just had golden contacts in and not peircing feral eyes. overall though, i love the poster. =]

  35. silly bj Says:

Love the poster, but maybe they should have been looking at each other…it’s all in the eyes (the window to the soul)

  36. Nostalgicmiss Says:

I think it’s perfect, absolutely perfect. It’s simple but captures the essence of the story. I wouldn’t have done anything differently.

Edward/Robert looks gorgeous and Bella/Kristen has captured the innocence. They really do look great together.

I think that the simplicity of the picture but the menacing yellow eyes will attract people who have no idea what the story is about.

I don’t think I can wait till December… My head just might explode in anticipation.

Thank you Larry, as always you rock!

  37. Oasis Says:

overall,i really like kristen’s and rob’s angles. But it would have been interesting to see other forms and features in the background. Honestly i think you would be able to keep the dark and cynical atmosphere AND add a little more behind the story.

  38. Lizzy Says:

First of all thanks again for this incredible tuesday, I believe that you really care about us fans so thank you, I think the poster is great, Edward looks really really pale like the vampire he is, and his eyes are amazing, bella looks very comfortable with Edward I believe this is a great poster!!

  39. Gabby Says:

I don’t know what to think.. there is just something about it that isn’t perfect. Don’t get me wrong, thank you so much for giving us this. Just something is off. Edwards Position looks rather odd, like he is standing on something the hunching over her. hmmm.

Love the new info Larry.. :D

  40. Candice Says:

OME!!!! (oh my edward. I got this from Twilight Moms even though I’m a teen). This is just amazing. At first, I thought it was a painting!!! Then I noticed Bella’s hand looked a little too real. Again, this is amazing

  41. IrishTea Says:

Wow, that looks amazing. Robert and Kristen look stunning!

  42. Natasha Says:

Really brilliant poster. But I think the eyes are pretty funny. But great, all in all. I love it, and there’s nothing more irritating than waiting for the movie. Come on, 7 months?

But oh wells. I’d still wait anyways. Robert and Kristen are so perfect together, don’t you think?
    Love ‘em.

  43. Laura Says:

Ok now the next question is…where can we buy this unbelievable poster?

  44. ginnie-pop Says:

This is an incredible picture, they are really incredibly perfect together!
I’m so excited about the movie! EEEEEEE!
    Thank you!

  45. Kristy Says:

It is perfect! Both of their expressions just speak to the torment and love within them. Just perfect. I love it!!!

  46. Chere Bella Says:

Love it! if we could get a bit more of Edward though, it would be perfect!!! :hearts:

  47. jesika Says:

That pic is so awosme i love rob looks so sad its hot kristen looks good to omg i cant wait till december torture larry your awsome

  48. Sameera Says:

The poster is really amazing. I love how edgy it is–the shadows and the contrasts between their clothes and their skin makes it rather stunning to look at. At first I was a bit surprised to see that only Edward and Bella were featured in the poster, but that actually makes perfect sense considering that this movie is about THEM and the development of their relationship. I suppose there’s time for the others later. :P
My only critique is that the shadows make Robert’s eyes look a biiiiit off, but I really REALLY love this poster. It’s definitely becoming my new desktop background. :D

  49. Toxic_Black Says:

Amazing! loving the eyes and dark theme!

  50. Crystle Says:

I do really like it. Quite a lot, actually.. I think its pretty well done.

This could just be a personal preference or something, but I hate how in all the things we’ve got so far, they’re looking away from each other. Not that it doesn’t look like they’re together, but they’re more focused on one another than some pics are making it seem…

I do love it, either way, though. Its nice. Kristen looks absolutely gorgeous!
