Before there was “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz,” there was “Spaced,” one of the funniest series to ever come out of Britain (and that’s saying something). A couple months ago we broke the news that the show was finally coming to DVD, and now it’s official with BBC America giving a July 22 release date for the 14-episode box set.
For those not in the know, “Spaced” was a manically edgy, unconventional TV comedy that starred Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson as two strangers who pretend to be a married couple in order to rent an apartment. Directed by Edgar Wright and co-starring Pegg’s partner-in-crime Nick Frost as a weapons-obsessed military nut, “Spaced” was filled to the brim with every obscure pop culture reference under the sun…like a genius-level “Family Guy.”
To give you an idea of this show’s awesomeness, one episode involved Pegg losing his job at the comic book store over his inability to stop railing against “The Phantom Menace.” Another involved zombies. Imagine every brilliant part of their films distilled into episodic television with the same snap-shot editing style and interwoven plotlines, and that’s the majesty of “Spaced.”
Along with the 14 episodes, the three-disc set will include commentary from Wright, Pegg, Stevenson (now Hynes), along with show admirers Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Bill Hader, Matt Stone, Patton Oswalt and Diablo Cody. We also get an on-stage cast reunion from 2007, a feature-length doc, outtakes, deleted scenes, raw footage, photo galleries, and a cool-sounding feature called the “Homage-O-Meter” that gives onscreen descriptions of each pop culture reference.
So yeah, trust me on this one…pick up this set.
